Buying a Range Rover Classic...Have I missed the boat?
Discussion
The newest one is going to be around 19 years old. The later ones - post 1989 - seem to be worse for corrosion than the earlier ones. 20 years of being subject to the salt on UK roads is a problem.
Mine's nearly 30 but I can weld & I paint professionally I've done a LOT of welding over the 20 odd years I've had it & it had had a respray before I bought it. I've resprayed it once.
You MIGHT find one that's been in a barn for years & bone dry but that's very very rare & they often go for silly prices.
Re-importing one from somewhere hot & dry is a consideration, but again that could be expensive.

It's a pretty difficult one, they seem to have gone a little mad ( sure the bubble has to burst at some point)
The issue is really the cost of maintenance / restoration ( if you can't do it yourself .. I certainly can't !!)
Mines only done 60k with two owners and been stored in all it's life, it's been off the road for a couple of years and I decided to out it back on the road this year the costs soon spiralled out of expectation !
In total I spent just over £5k which was servicing, wheel refurb, new tyres , rear wheel arches, brakes and suspension.
Anyway back to the point if someone spent this kind of money then I guess they are going to want 10k plus for I which makes sense. We won't ever sell ours so it doesn't really matter value wise.
Is there any particular reason you want a manual ? They are just are quite hard to find
Seen lots of poor ones about have to agree good ones are hard to find
Japan seems to be a good place to import from, but even they seem pricy now !!!

I don't know anything about it but it looks reasonable and it's a manual

I saw that at Walton motors, and still debating whether I go and have a look but if you punch in Walton Motors in google, all you see if bad review after bad review regards to them putting dodgy MOT's on car etc.
Found a 1991 man Vogue with 111000 on the clock I'm going to have a look at on Sunday, its up for 4500 so will see whats all about.
Thanks for the offer on the LSE, but really want a manual. LSE's are going for good money.
Reason for a manual, I've driven both and prefer a manual and cheaper on fuel.

They are about. The actual problem is that total junk can be made to look really good because of the ali panels and the easy supply of OK interiors. And most under £5k are rotten in the usual places.
It's really a matter of bringing yourself up to speed on the obvious rot spots and then it's just a matter of wading through the numbers. They are out there.
I picked up an absolutely rock solid one last summer for £6k.

All the non visible panels are mild steel, so whilst the outside looks fine it can be corrosion city underneath. So a thorough inspection is necessary.
Good news is that there are lots of panels available & a RRC is basically a big boy's meccano kit.

Certainly looks nice. I wonder why there's no image of the rear after mentioning a new tailgate etc?Would be interesting to zoom in on that inner wheel arch for a closer look. I can never remember if 92's were black or colour coded there?
If I had to guess I'd reckon it had had a blow in. What do you reckon?

Mine off for its MOt tomorrow - can't believe it's been a year since its refurb
Just seen that tonight, does look nice. I really want a manual but this could sway my decision. Only problem is I'm in Devon and the Rangy is in Glasgow.
Going to look at that one at Walton motors you said about on Friday if they still have it, also found this one at an auction that's on next Sunday that looks nice

Correct me if I'm wrong but thought the 3.9's had colour coded arches.

Def though not necessarily a bad thing if the work has been done properly.

Absolutely. It was just the absence of pictures of the tailgate that caught my attention really. And wanted to zoom in to see the gap between the rear wing and the quarter as that's usually the quickest giveaway of a blow in. Have to say it looks too good to be true !! Mine a 91 and it's colour coded.
It's either been totally treasured ! I.e kept inside all it's life or had major restoration
Or it looks dreadfully close up !

Thanks Phib. My K was also. My 89 has the satin black inners so I wonder if that is the change over year when the engine also went to 3.9 and a few other minor things changed. It's either been totally treasured ! I.e kept inside all it's life or had major restoration
Or it looks dreadfully close up !
