As we all know, there has been a bit of fuss in the media, etc over the past year or two about the ''ease'' with which new RR products can be stolen.

So my L405 Vogue came up for renewal, obviously with keyless go. It lives on my driveway behind full size gates in a zero-crime suburban area. I am with Admiral and last year I believe I paid around £800 for the RR.

This year, they call me up to give the renewal.... £2,400. The reason? "Ah yes, it's an issue with the RR due to them being a known security risk". He offers me the 'best deal' he can... brining it down £50 to £2,350.

So I tell the guy to leave it, I go to comparethemeerkat.com & run the quotes. Admiral come back the cheapest, this time only £1,100 for exactly the same cover.

I call them up & they match my renewal price to the online quote. Brining it down from £2,400 to £1,100 for the year. It's still more than last year despite no accidents, points, etc but a LOT less than my initial quote.

I'm interested, is this them trying to take advantage of the known security issues with these cars & thinking people will just pay up as it ''makes sense'' and is land rovers fault?? Why else would the initial renewal quote be SO much higher than the actual quote, I've never seen this before.

Either way, come renewal time it seems it's always worth running a comparison quote as your same company may offer you a far cheaper deal.

see my post about the keyless system

you can get the new KVM under warranty and that should vastly reduced your insurance quotes as it solves the theft issues

Worth it whatever you drive. Until such time as the insurance companies decide to look after their existing customers instead of offering all the goodies to new business.

I wonder if this is purely a regular 'trick' - i.e. offer a high rate to existing customers, make super profit when a large % fail to check. Or they have added on even more this time round especially for RR owners likely to be aware of security concerns about their cars.

Yes I did see that, is there a standard term for it that the insurers 'know'. I'm just unsure how I could tell the insurers about it being done in a way that they would understand and thus reflect in a reduced premium. I.E. if it's a known fix or not by insurers.

tell your insurers you have had the KVM security update

plus use a broker rather than the like of Admiral - they deal mostly with 'family cars' and really have no idea about high value cars so price them to cover themselves or avoid taking the insurance

Renewals are always more pricey than new business. It's always been like this in the insurance world. Legalised theft, but nothing new.

It is simply just opportunism, coupled with the insurer hoping for policyholder apathy

Can you advise me of the broker you've used who was able to assist with this?

I am going to LR this week anyway to get a door speaker replaced, so will discuss the KVM security update with them then.

Does anybody have experience they're trying this trick for L322s as well?
