Looking through the classifieds I noticed new cars are rated at 306 bop and the older ones 288bhp, when did this happen and is there any difference in the drive.

The new engine kicked in from cars built around early Feb 2015. Mine was built 10th Feb and delivered 1st March and has the new engine. The newer engine has 700nm of torque and is very fuel efficient. I have driven the older engine and mine does feel way more smooth, refined and powerful.

What kind of returns do you get from the newer engine?

Looking at buying the wife one and interested to hear on MPG.

It's my wife's daily driver - school runs around town etc 32-34mpg
On a long motorway run anything up to 45-47mpg

When I drive it like a stole it I get 27mpg

That is really good, better than I expected.

She currently using my 535d so in terms of long runs, it's slighly better!

Interestingly I used to have an E60 535d too and this engine feels pretty similar in terms of performance but with better fuel efficiency!

Any other changes as it appears I've just purchased a jan 2015 build with old map with 288bhp. Not fussed but wondered if any other differences

I noticed this too. sneaky with no big announcement either, I would be furious if I had bought a car on the crossover with the lower output. I sold my 64 plate car after 2 months as it was gutless and not particularly economical, 29-30 mpg at best, it always seemed to be in the wrong gear too struggling to find any torque. the new one sounds a lot better.
Is it the same motor with a remap or completely different?
presumably JLR can remap the earlier engines if its the former....
