Good time of the day to everyone.

I have 1997 300tdi Defender. I was repairing rotten corners on bulkhead untill it became clear that there is no corners left to repair. Rot was so bad that I pretty much lost my entire top of the bulkhead as well as having holes below the bonnet fixing mounts. So I decided to take it out and replace.

But here is my problem. The original bulkhead is pretty much impossible to find in good condition. So replacement will have to be more modern.

I found 2 bulkheads. Similar in price and condition. One is from Puma the other one is from TDCi. I understand that they both will need work in order to fit. But in your opinion which one would be a better finish?

Puma = TDCi

Both the post-2007 ford transit engine in either 2.4 or 2.2L guise.

Assume you mean a Puma or Td5?

If so then the latter is best as you have the same dash & vents just to start off!

Well this would explain why they are similar in price smile

I will look for Td5 then.

you might want to fit a galvanised bulkhead instead of a second hand one, which will be either starting to rot, or rotten as much as the one you have.

Given labour is much of the cost of fitting the bulkhead then you would be better off surely getting a reconditioned galvanised one from ashtree land rover.

A defender bulkhead from them is around 1k. It will definitely fit your vehicle, have any holes repaired and then hot dip galvanised so it lasts.

Bulkheads I am looking at are £450 - £500, so £1000 is a bit too much.

Buy cheap, but twice.
Get a galvanised one. The arse ache of changing a bulkhead means you'll only want to do it once.a
TDi and TD5 bulkheads are interchangeable with a bit of work but aren't a direct swap. The biggest give away is the location of the wiper motor.

Prices of bulkheads are on the rise, I recently purchased a genuine series 3 bulkhead (one of 3 known to exist), brand new never fitted cost a bomb; I also have a tdci which has had a bulkhead replacement on Land rover warranty, due to the rise in costs I've purchased another tdci bulkhead and put in storage for future use / sale if needed, a genuine TD5 bulkhead is apparently 1200+ and few left.

Few left, or none left? When I did mine it was simply impossible to buy new.
LR just don't make them any more, and all those prviously held in stock have gone apparently.

Very few left, P.a Blanchard had 2 at the time, another company had just sold there remaining one to the land rover museum...

it did cost over 9x what a current tdci model bulkhead retails at redface
