It's heavily tyre dependent. All of your pictures are of big, chunky, square shouldered mud tyres. Pick something more moderate and the smaller size looks, well, smaller.

I have BFG AT's in 265 and personally prefer the look over 235's.

...don't forget the rim width!

Stick the tyres on a 6.5" instead of a 5.5" rim, it'll look more normal as you don't get the impression it's 'bulging' over the sides.
