2002 Range Rover Gear Selector and ignition Barrel

Good Evening,

I have a 2002 Range Rover TDV6 HSE and I have an issue with the gear selector and ignition. I can turn the key but not select a gear. I can Select a gear but can not get the key out the ignition. I am putting my fingers under the leather gear selector and lifting and pushing a small "leaver". I am hoping there is a permanent solution?

The gearbox selects gears and drives smoothly.

This could well be a brake light switch problem.
