I spent Friday driving the new defender, off and on road, including the 2.0l Ingenium sequential twin turbo engine.

Bloody loved it!

The technology in the car is amazing.

I saw one in a dark red today at the dealer.

It looked better in a darker shade but still not great.

I had a text from a fellow PHer to say he's collecting his First Edition model in Silicone Silver on the 1st March - it'll be interesting how it shapes up as he's had a top spec Disco 4 as his current car & also run Q7s & Cayennes before

Have ours on way soon replacing a D4 test drove the 3l hugely better to drive as a road car with better space and much better tech. Easy upgrade imo

Define better space. Most reports are suggesting its lost the airyness of the old D3/4. Boot space is alos only a few litres more, most most reports say the boot looks and feels smaller than the old car.

As far as tech is concerned, yes its leagues ahead of the older cars, but looking at five series, the D5 looks to have missed the boat...again

Here you go....(& apologies for the size)

Apparently first impressions are that it's impressive, although it's only done about 30 miles so far!

the rear seats are more like real seats now, so more legroom, better seats and they have isofix so no more issues with boosters wobbling around . Combined with the quick electric folding the car is a much better 7 seater than before.

airiness maybe yes with the more sloping windscreen there is less volume around you than the old car

..despite the lower 2nd row seat base which is a bit of a miss.

Understand what you are saying regarding the sloping windscreen. I'm guessing they had to do it to increase aero and help emissions and mpg.

Electric folding seats are very trick, but they will be a nightmare to owners in 5-10 years time. LR couldn't design the folding seats in the D3 with any compentance, so god know what will happen with the electric items.

That's strange, because the rear seats are one of the major complaining points! Having sat in them myself they are utterly dreadful and wouldn't be acceptable in a 15k Focus, let alone a 70k Discovery! Low seat base, zero thigh support and flat, hard backs. Awful design that Land Rover should be ashamed of.

added above pics the rear seats think are fine def better than the D4 HSE we traded in, and importantly they have isofix to keep the boosters secure.

interior is a big step up really feels more like a Range Rover now, and new Meridan hifi is also v good. sunroofs are also a lot bigger now and feel more panoramic.

driving the car is a revelation far lighter and more refined. The sat nav and systems in general are also good maybe not exceptional but compared with D4 far far better that was one of the worst points on the D4 imo.

overall it feels like a very major update and well worth the trade up cost

Went and had a poke around one in our local dealership yesterday.

WRT 'rear' seats, I think there's a little confusion as to whether people are talking about the 2nd row seats or the 3rd row seats (in the boot).

I can see that the 3rd row seats are much more like real seats than our current D4, but when raised there's literally no boot capacity.

The 2nd row seats are as described; flat low seat bases with no lateral support. Clearly designed to work seamlessly with the electric gubbins that means you can fold them from the boot and they go flat with no issue. Not nice; felt like you were sitting on the seat rather than in the seat.

Speaking of which; the degree of electric control for 2nd row seats / 3rd row seats / suspension / boot / tailgate flap, just inside the boot itself is mental. Unless QC has got better, all this extra tech is going to come back and bit at some point.

Anyway, one thing I do like; access to the 3rd row. In the D4, yes you could fold the 2nd row seats, but they didn't get out of the way for you to walk through. Now with the D5, you can, which is much better.

Overall, the D5 seemed to be a big lump of a car compared to the D4. Showroom version was on 22's too, which seemed a good fit for the arches, but didn't sit right with my view of how the Disco's should be used. I know the majority will see off road as the verge when dropping little Jonny off for rugby practice.

I'm sure it's fully capable, just seems to have missed the target on a few things. Even the salesman was talking about the possibility of a Velar as an alternative. No thanks.

Still think our next steed will be a run-out of D4 that's had the depreciation sting taken out of it.

I went to see the D5 this week in a showroom - and just sat in the second row of seats. Yup, I thought the seat was rather poor and didn't provide any under-thigh support, the floor feeling like it was too high. The disco sport was massively better in that respect. However, When I got home, I thought before posting anything I really ought to try the second row in my D4 (I always occupy the driver's seat) - and it was just the same! I was very surprised...

I really dont understand LR's strategy now.

New defender will be equivalent of D4
Disco sport is a bigger evoque
D5 is a bigger Disco Sport
RRS is...bigger than a D5?
RR is...well an RR. That's the only bit that makes sense to me.

Where does the velar fit? Between the Evoque and the Disco sport?
