I am looking to purchase a 4.2 or 5.0 SC Range Rover or a Sport 2006 to 2010 MY

Hopefully some of you can offer me some pointers on what to look for when buying and what goes wrong with these machines.

Regards
Robin

I bought an 06MY Car in April
I had 69K miles on it with FSH.

Its a Land Rover so I expected pain.

So far (.........touch wood) its been fine.

11k OF FUN, FAST THIRST miles.
Best trip was a run to a shooting competition in Holland.
Four up and it monstered the miles.
Kicks down two gears at 100 when you ask for more.

I have put AT2 Grabbers on now for the winter season and it takes me everywhere I need to go.

I've owned my 4.2 for over three years and I truly love the thing!

Yes, do please make yourself known on the FFRR forum.

Also consider a supercharger pulley modification on the 4.2 to improve low-end power, torque and throttle response. It really livens things up.

The 5.0, I gather, is faster and more refined with more toys. Prices are tremendously good value for what you get, but the 4.2 is even cheaper and is sill superbly well equipped. The pulley modification narrows the performance gap a lot.

Depends how much you're looking to spend.

I changed from 4.6 P38 to 5.0S/C L322 in March.

I suddenly realised what good value they were.

I chose a high mileage 09 reg (but 2010 model). Bought with 120K miles (full same main dealer history).

I chose 2010 model onwards as it has more tech + 5.0 engine. Most impressed by the Adaptive damping and also enjoying the cooled seats!

Still haven't got used to the performance. I did sums before I bought and worked out it would cost approx £800 per year extra in fuel, compared to running a diesel, doing 10K miles. I think one or two standing starts per week help to justify this cost!?

I've seen them as low as £16.5K with similar high miles. My local specialist said the miles aren't anything to worry about (unlike diesel gearboxes, for instance). I've done approx 10K since March (inc 2800 miles in 5 days Poole - John O'Groats - Poole and it has been faultless so far - I'm not sure I would ever have dared write such a statement about my P38!!

I bought mine with rattly front end. Had timing chain tensioners replaced straight away - they were broken plastic - google common fault.

Any more specific questions, just shout.

Oh, and yes it's black with ivory - not really my choice but 99% seem to be!

My parents have had their 4.2 SC since new, although they've more recently bought an l405 S/C we decided to keep the old one as it's still a great car and worth relatively little

It had a few (mainly electrical) issues in the first few years but touch wood it's been reliable since with only normal maintenance, now it's on 115k. We refreshed the rear lower arm bushes recently which sharpened it up nicely.

It's still a lovely car and IMHO rides better than the new one and is more comfortable in plenty of aspects. Although it's fairly reluctant in the corners by comparison as well as slower and thirstier it's great for smoking around in and still very enjoyable to drive.

I had a 5.0 SC. Best car I've owned but also the most expensive to run as a daily. 17-20mpg normal but I've seen 6 or 7 having fun.........
But then name another that you can transport 2 large hounds and a family across a ploughed field one day, turn up at the Ritz in another and worry supercars on the third....

I've just (this week) bought a 5.0 supercharged.

I was after the 4.2 engined one but just couldn't find what I wanted, and saw an awful amount of dogs out there. I decided that it was worth spending an extra few quid to get one with the specifications I was after and, so far, I've not been disappointed. Apart from not being able to get in it this morning as the doors were frozen solid. frown Hopefully this is now sorted, though apparently it's a well recorded issue.

As for the fuel consumption, they're a big heavy lump but you have to put fuel in them all. Just budget for a little bit more. smile It seems to be doing a lot better than the SRT8 it replaced so far...

I'm considering moving from my 2.7 RRS to a 5.0 S/C FFRR or RRS, my 2.7 has done 113k and has cost quite a bit this year-the gearbox may well need doing soon too. With the no doubt impending tax hike for diesels and my now only doing 7-8k a year in the car plus the engine being more reliable and fun, in my head it seems like a good idea, I was getting annoyied with LR after this RRS, thought about getting a Cayenne Turbo instead but I know I'd just not be happy with it.
I'm going to keep my current car another 6 Months or so then make the change.
Is 15 MPG urban/semi urban realistic?, according to the computer my 2.7 RRS is doing about 24 MPG on the driving I do.

Thanks guys for all the input so far, keep it coming as still looking. Have read the FFRR forum buying threads, some of these are a little scary...... but then so is the supercharger threads on the Alpina H7 engines in my B6S

I am finding prices seem to be all over the place, many private sellers are asking more than Main dealers, I have priced a couple of facelift 2007 low mileage 4.2's and the sellers want £3k over every online valuation I can find.... it is not like these are hard to come by, although I do want an ivory interior without the woodand preferably not black, so that does narrow my choices down.

The problem is, there is so much old tat about, that you need to pay a premium for the few nice ones that are left.

18 months ago, when we were looking I looked at so much rubbish in dealers. I wanted ivory with piano black and exterior colour was secondary. One, described as immacualte by the lieing st of a dealer, looked like the piano black had been cleaned with a brillo pad and like potatoes had been grown in the leather. Many were of similar standard. Perhaps it's something to do with original owners having more money than sense and just not caring.

Eventually we found a lovely car, albeit parchment leather which was a private sale, just below independent dealer pricing. It was worth it to save more disappointment on 500 mile round trips to dealers who can't or won't describe their vehicles accurately. Of course, a private sale does not come with a warranty but that's pretty much the same unless you buy Land Rover Assured, anyway. I know it's a risk but if the provenance is there it takes out some of the risk. Mines cost a new front suspension airbag (service part really) and a supercharger coolant pump (known issue) so about £600 since we've had it. Warranty cost for 18 months would have been around £3k so currently, quids in.

Good luck with your search.

Owner of 3 x P38's so I'm not phased by a bit of Diy maintenance, but a a friend bought an 05/06 one and it really put me of even trying one as punt.

Was suprised to see the rear arches going rusty due to lack of any stone protection from the wheel arch liner which stops an inch or two short of the lip - what a crap design for an off roader.

Rear brakes kept seizing on - which i believe is lack of maintenance.

The Suspension squeaked like an old pram.

streering column packed up and was potentially thousands to replace but got lucky with a 2nd one out of a rr sport i think. It was off the road for a couple of months waiting to find one, but was still about £800 fitted.

Of course it was thirsty - but duh...

I have owned my supercharged Range Rover vogue SE 2006 model for just over four years.

I still absolutely love this car and I am shortly going to do some paint work and a few restorative measures to it, as I intend to keep it. I have looked around at replacing it with either a new are L322 model, perhaps a 5.0L. However every time I look I just consider that I am spending more money for a slightly newer car with some cooling seats and what not and a bit more power. Because there is nothing really wrong with my present car I just do not feel so inclined. I bought my car in November 2012 for a measly £15,000 and the car had 87,000 miles on the clock, plus a full Land Rover service history. I have serviced the car with my local garage, who happen to be very switched on with the Range Rover and Jaguars. We do not have a Land Rover dealer here on the Isle of Wight and I was certainly not going to travel to the mainland to service my car and keep its history up, notwithstanding the inherent costs associated with the dealer.

I do on average 8000 miles per year, any more than that and I don't think I could stomach the fuel bills. As it stands with the milage I do I am quite happy, clearly, as otherwise I would not have kept the car this long!

I have in the time of owning it consistently average 13 mpg. If I am doing motorway miles and I'm just cruising at 75 or 80 mph then it is quite possible to get 19/20/21+ Mpg. The best I think I have ever recorded when I was really trying hard was 24 mpg. As it goes I do not have a great deal of motorway here on the Isle of Wight! So consequently 13 mpg for all my driving is normal. I tow my rally car on a trailer quite frequently and when I do I generally record 15 to 16 mpg for the duration of my weekend away.

So far as maintenance is concerned, I have replaced two airbags, a compressor and the compressor motor, the supercharger water pump and three door handle cables. Annoyingly my car is six months too old so that it does not have the digital television. The DVDs in the head rests work okay but occasionally a DVD will become stuck in the player and much to my children's disappointment the Jungle book remains missing in action. Also the screens on the head rests are starting to get a little bit grainy. However the Harman Kardon sound system is absolutely brilliant and are use the aux cable for iPhone technique to play music.

oh, one other thing my heated steering wheel broke and at about £900 to replace I have elected to wear gloves instead! Heated seats are still peachy.

As I mentioned I do a healthy amount of towing and this is one area where the car is simply brilliant. It is utterly planted and completely composed. It's such a refreshing vehicle to step out of at the end of a long towing stint because the car is so commanding.

I have used the vehicle off road but it only has road Tyres so you can't expect too much, that said even on wet grass it's pretty good provided you've got some tread on your road tyres.

I keep thinking what I might possibly replace it with if it was to be anything other than a Range Rover again, I toy the idea of E60 M5's, RS6's but I just don't really want an estate car given the towing that I do. With the performance offered and all the luxury, I'm at a stalemate.

If you can cope with the fuel bills, they're fairly reliable and I'd recommend one to anyone.

It will also do 110mph up the Lavant straight at Goodwood in case you need to know!

You get used to it.

Previous cars.

Impreza 18mpg
Modified Evo5 18mpg
Isuzu trooper (first tow car when I got into rallying) 16mpg. Gutless 3.1 TD
Toyota Landcruiser 4.2 TD Amazon 18mpg
Range Rover 13mpg.

Bit of a nose dive with the MPG with the Range Rover, but given the other cars, was hardly used to smoking round in a 1.9 Tdi Passat at 55mpg beforehand.

I was intitially looking for a v8 disco but then realised the l322 sc was in budget and now finding the very hard to see past them. I drove an 07 plate recently and absolutely loved the car, the driving position and the power delivery.

Only issue I am having is finding a good one. Loads about locally (Middle East) but not many that have been cared for. I'm considering upping my budget a little to either secure a late 4.2 sc or a 5.0 hse. The latter being only 20bhp down with less to wrong and more toys.

Has anyone here driven both the 4.2sc and 5.0 hse? How do they compare?

Use will be mainly on road but it'll also see wadis and light desert trail camping, plus towing. Happily fuel is only 30p a litre for super unleaded so mpg is bottom of the agenda.

You wont find many who have driven the 5.0 engine, it's not available over here!

I've driven another vehicle with it and it was a nice enough engine though, not sure if it might feel a bit thin at the bottom end in something like an L322 though
