Which Range Rover Sport for less than £20k?
Discussion
Hi, Newbie here.
Reached middle age and never had a big old 4x4 an it's suddenly become an itch I have to scratch.
I did a search in the classifieds for RRS's and the choice is bewildering what with engine sizes etc so, in a nutshell, any advice for a first timer on which to avoid, which have likely monster service and repair bills attached and which are a little more easy on the wallet (if any)?
Many thanks

If you haven't owned a LR product before you will be unaware that they are an acquired taste sometimes soured by eye watering repair bills caused by in explicable breakdowns normally at the worst time possible.
But aside from that they are the best car you'll ever own.
Get a Supercharged Sport with the lowest miles possible.
They are a scream.

I have a RRS 2.7 V6 owned from new in Dec 2005. It's now done just under 100k.
My experience so far is not one of it being a money pit. In that time I've had 2 issues, an A/C fault which was a £600 fix & EGR valves stuck which was a £650 fix. Aside from that just standard servicing & consumables.

I've a 2010 Sport, 3.0 HSE. It's been no hassle, serviced at my local garage, better on fuel than my previous 2.7 and a far superior engine.
Unless you need the s/c petrol fix or a thumper of a 3.6 V8 oil burner, this is where the maximum choice will be.
Suggest you avoid wheels over 20", mine is on those and still managed to break one. £600+ from a main dealer, still £250 as a second hand item. Side steps are useful if original, HSE trim gives all the toys and a decent history helps. Cam belts are at 100,000 but no big deal. Tyres are what you'd expect. Recall over tow hitch if that's an issue for you. If it fails, they offer you an agricultural old-Discovery style option. Suspension warning light can be just a tiny loss of fluid level, the reservoir neck is a fraction too tall and it throws a warning light but no code.
IMHO dark colours are best, mine is green with black inside. Very horse and hound
Great car.

ive had a RRS 4.2 SC, 2006. I got it at about 90k, its on 112k now. paid 15k
2 owners before me, full main dealer service and had the original warranty extended every year to 100k.
since Ive had it:
sus compressor under warranty - £1200
brake lines corroded - £1200
other crap - £600
they are money pits.

I took a TDV8 from 0-60,000 miles in 7 1/2 years
It was lovely and in the depths of winter a dream
Trips to the south of France were also pretty damn sweet for summer holls
Along the way it chewed an alternator, electronic handbrake and a ride height sensor
The only thing which stranded me was the sensor which cost peanuts to buy and a couple of hundred quid to calibrate
Having a tame indie a mile down the road helped massively
I was stupid enough to never renew its warranty after 3y and lucky enough it didnt throw any surprises my way
Even the guys at the garage told me theyve never known one as blessed as mine when it came to reliability
Best car Ive ever had - probably
Do I miss it - absolutely
Was I lucky - for sure
Good luck

EDIT: the sweet spot in the range is a 2010 facelift model with the TDV8 engine, the interior is a lot more lovely than my 2009 car and the diesel V8 was phased out soon after. The TDV6 engine in the early cars is nasty and a complete slug, the later SDV6 is a lot better but real men drive V8's - right???
