range rover velar
Discussion
An interesting prospect.
I got an Ingrnium DS rather than an Evoque because the Eboque was just too small for our needs.
So this is the Evoque XL that's long bern rumoured.
With so many models in the LR range, how will this be pitched? Slightly more expensive than DS models? Less than a RRS, so the same price as a Disco 5?
There already seems to be a glut of choice in the JLR middle ground. DS and F-Pace are similarly priced. Disco 5 is in the mix with cheaper RRS models. So where will the Velar fit in? The gap between Evoqure and RRS? The F-Pace and Disco 5 sit there.
All very confusing, but having been left less than impressed by the Disco 5, I await the Velar with anticipation.
It's a shame they are using the Velar name. It's special and should be kept that way, like the BMW M1. JLR must own a host of heritage names that they could have used it. County? Vision? Stormer? Top of my head names there.

not totally sure if its a evoque xl or something more bling like the x6
do think there is a gap for something bigger than evoque but smaller than range rover. Its exactly what we're looking for as dont need the 7 seats of a disco and dont like the new one. dont like the ds interior it looks a but cheap to me. looking at nearly new disco 4/q5/macan so v interested although i expect it will cost a bit too much

reading and writing can be confusing for some people ....All very confusing, but having been left less than impressed by the Disco 5, I await the Velar with anticipation.
F-PACE is a driver focussed cross over SUV, RWD bias, fun to drive - not a LR competitor
Disco 5 is a full size 7 seater, more utilitarian than a RR and immensely capable off road, with a huge family & activity bias
The Velar slots in between RRE and RRS. Based on F-PACE platform. There is a huge gap in this market for LR at the £50k price point.
I'll have to take your word for it.
Some of us are still trying to get over the introduction of the Discovery 1
I had an Evoque as a loan car in January and my feeling was that it was rather like my washing machine. Competent but of no interest beyond it's function.
I'm aware I must be in a minority based on the sales figures.

Fully agree with Mr Farquar.
I had a Discovery Sport as a loan car a few weeks ago and it left me completely cold. No soul to it at all and just another humdrum experience that could and should have been so much more.
I don't dislike modern Land Rovers, but feel the last of them is / was the Discovery 4 and the L322 Range Rover and I readily acknowledge that I'm in a minority here as the current LR range appear to be selling well.
The old analogy of a square peg won't fit a round hole has changed somewhat. These days in the car market there appear to be many shapes requiring identical holes for them. And where a new shape is required, one is created. This, possibly, is where the Velar has arisen from in my possibly jaundiced opinion.

Why on earth would they squander such an iconic name on an X6 rival. Further proof, if any was needed, that they have lost the plot and aren't going to suddenly remember where they put it.
Please stop making vehicles that look like they have been photocopied and invent another Velar.
Couldn't have put it better myself. Whilst it's clearly profitable, JLR's design studio these days relies on one single tool, and it looks a lot like this:Please stop making vehicles that look like they have been photocopied and invent another Velar.

So accepting that there must be a demographic who want this sort of rubbish, they've completely turned away from the market that supported them through the decades, those who don't want an identikit fancy schmancy arty farty hoity toity mobile brothel, they want something more utilitarian and reliable as they're not in the habit of putting on mascara while instagramming their latest tweet on farce book. Or something.
Of course JLR might be doing their old devotees a favour by making them look at other marques and thus introducing them to the concept of reliability and competent service. Naturally at some point someone will come along and declare that they ran an L322 for umpty squillion miles and 15 wild camping trips in the Atlas mountains requiring only oil and brake pads, a very rare beast indeed. But the point is that there's a huge customer base with great affection for Land Rover products but they are being driven away. Sort out the basics, reliability and the dealers.
Reliability, get rid of this shambles of Range Rovers with more warnings popping up on the computer than a teenager visiting a dodgy Russian pron site gets, Discovery S B pillar shambles, it goes on. FFS.
Dealers: "oh so your rear shock absorber is leaking sir, yes 20,000 miles is a bit unexpected, when would you like to bring it in so we can have a look (*NB) and sort it. We can do 3rd Tuesday next month, no nothing earlier, sorry, see you then"
On the day, after it's been there all day. " we've had a look (* ) and tested it's leaking, error yes we didn't need to keep it for a day to stick our head under the the wheel arch, but we need to order the part, and we need to make sure we get all the right parts, (# also NB) so when would you like to bring it in, we can do the fourth Wednesday after Michaelmas, unless you want a loan car in which case Hmmmm. "
One the next due day 5pm. "Err sorry sir but your car isn't ready, we forgot to order a spacer and we ordered the wrong mount, (# see above) so errrr. "
Bad word beginning with C.
Clowns! Why whatever did you think I meant?

Got to admit I can't see the gap in the market for this. Not my kind of cars though.
So the F-pace is the sporty luxury utility vehicle;
The Discovery Sport is the utility luxury sport vehicle;
And the Velar is the luxury sport utility vehicle?
F-Pace is Jaguar. Consider them as two separate brands (despite the obvious links between the two) and it makes a bit more sense. I've made up the "family" descriptions, as I don't know what they really are:So the F-pace is the sporty luxury utility vehicle;
The Discovery Sport is the utility luxury sport vehicle;
And the Velar is the luxury sport utility vehicle?
Ultimate Luxury 4x4:
Range Rover
Range Rover Sport
Range Rover Evoque.
Comfortable Utility:
Discovery
Discovery Sport
Multipurpose:
Defender (as was).
So this will fit a gap somewhere in between RRS and RRE in the "Ultimate Luxury" box. Discovery Sport drivers that want more status?
