Hi All thinking of buying 2012 discovery 4 any problems with 8 speed gearbox and any other problems to look for. Plus whats the difference between a 2012 and say a 2015. Also thinking of X5 and Q7 arround £25k. Will use mainly to tow 2500kg boat with max load including trailer 3500kg. Not off road.
Thanks
Thanks
Have a look on disco3.co.uk great buyers guide and a huge amount of knowledge on the forums.
A minor facelift from the 2012 to 2015 model (lights at the back go from clear to dark and a newer grille / front lights). As with anything buy on spec. HSE / HSE Luxury / Landmarks seem to be the ones to buy. Go and drive a few - great cars.

We've had two D4's. And we've made the most of the LR Approved Warranty's each time.
First was a 60-plate Bali Blue GS, we had from near-new to about 35k miles, which had:
- A replacement rear nearside suspension unit as the gaiter had split and dirt had got in and scored the metalwork.
- A replacement suspension compressor
- A replacement boot switch
- Brake pedal switch
Now we have a 61-plate Firenze Red HSE, currently knocking on 50k miles, which has had:
- Brake pedal switch
- Replacement power steering hoses which were weeping
- EGR valve x 2 (including a limp-home-mode on the first drive home from collection).
- Steering column UJ replacement as it was seizing up
- Drivers door window regulator replacement as it was grinding
They are very complex vehicles with a lot of stuff talking to itself so it has the ability to have a hissy fit at a moment's notice.
Yes there are alternatives that people bang on about (like a Toyota), but it serves our purposes so we will continue and prevail (with a suitable warranty in place).

In the land of Discoverys and Land Rovers in general that list is barely worth worrying about.First was a 60-plate Bali Blue GS, we had from near-new to about 35k miles, which had:

Later 8 speed is much nicer and more reliable than the 6 speed box. If memory serves the D4s can a fuel gauge problem where the tank will be full and the gauge will show as empty. However if you buying a vehicle with a warranty there is hardly anything to worry about....
