After some drugged up, un-insured low life decided it was a good idea to drive into my 2010 Range Rover sport HSE at huge speed while it was parked on my parents off road driveway, resulting in a total loss, this afternoon we collected a new 2017MY Discovery sport SE Tech with full leather optioned in Corris grey.

1st impressions are very good, more modern looking than the old sport we had, interior is functional and a very nice place to sit, no it's not as sumptuous as the new Disco 5 (which is lovely inside but £20k more to buy) but it's certainly not cheap feeling.

Drives well, plenty of poke for what it's designed for and plenty of room as well.

I'll get some pics up later and more ownership feedback.

Oh and if you are in Kent then the service received from the sales exec Jon Hall at Guy Salmon Maidstone really was amazing and I would recommend going to see him if your thinking of getting a new Land Rover of any description.

The level of service and attention to detail was as if I'd just dropped £100k on a RR Vouge not the cheapest car in the current range.

48 hours in and 1st impressions continue to impress. Very nice place to be on a motorway cruise down to rugby today, plenty of room in the back for rugby player son and all his kit and returned over 40mpg.

While waiting for the insurance payout we had a Volvo XC90 D5 for about a month and the Disco sport really does seem a much better car, nicer to drive, just as roomy inside yet doesn't feel like driving a barge, which the Volvo did and better feel good factor for certain, I just never felt anything about the Volvo, it was pretty good but just dull and dare I say boring?

Got a 2.0 SE Tech manual for my wife last September. Having had 2 Freelanders since 2011 it is a big step up. The new engine is so much smoother than the Ford 2.2 although you do need to watch ad blu consumption, our first top up was after around 5000 miles. Fuel consumption is around 5 mpg better than the Freelander and it's much quieter. I would have preferred an automatic but she is the main user of the car.

3rd row of seats are only good for small adults and children but useful when you need them.

Only negative with the car is that the interior plastics are prone to scratching as are the plastics round the wheel arches but the quality feels quite good on the rest of the car.

Hunters Land Rover in Tadcaster were pretty poor, this is our third car from there and will be our last, the salesman was really arrogant which I guess comes from working in a dealership where the cars sell themselves.

What age XC90 were you given? If it was 2015 onwards then, of course, opinions will inevitably vary but if you even remotely need a higher end 7 seat car then there's all bar nothing that the Disco Sport beats it on.

Don't get me wrong, the Disco Sport is a great example of strong packaging and it crams a lot into the envelope. But...

- the middle row on the Disco Sport is extremely good. However the boot in any configuration is nowhere near as big as the Volvo. And in 7 seat mode there's pretty much zero practical boot space. When looking for a new car I took down the usual crap we cart around and the Sport was a squeeze/compromise.
- the interior is significantly less nice feeling. Switch gear and touch surfaces noticeably cheaper feeling than a Disco 4 let alone the XC90. I did see a spec'd up version that was much better, but also very expensive (and still not as nice IMO).
- the tech, at least in the 2 cars I sat in, was nowhere near as good and felt decidedly last gen. More Disco 4.1 than something that moves the game on.

Land Rover makes nicer engines for sure, and the footprint of the Disco Sport was pretty appealing (which helps with the way it drives, along with weight). But it is in no way close to rivalling the XC90 as a large family proposition IMO (and I suspect most needing a bigger car than a Disco Sport). It'll be interesting to see what the new XC60 is like as I suspect that will be more in line.

Should our kids/their grandparents ever get to the point were we don't need a boot at the same time as 7 seats then a Disco Sport might be an option and I'll definitely see how they've developed. But for someone actively looking at a new proper 7 seater a month or so ago, it was a no contest.

Sorry to be a fly in the ointment but I think these things (and the new D5) look ghastly. Glad you like yours though!

Good to hear positive vibes from a DS owner.
Its looking like this will be my next Co Car.
Same spec SE Tech with a few extras make the list just over Forty thousand.

Using Carwow I have managed 7.1% discount.

Thanks for the feedback guys, the XC90 we had was a 66 plate so the latest one, I just didn't gel with it at all and it left me numb when driving it. For certain it is a very capable 7 seat family wagon but nothing about it at all that got me excited or even remotely feel good factor about it. Agreed on the extra room in the back with seven seats in use but to fair it's priced against the disco 5 and not the Disco sport. That being said i'd still take the Disco sport over the Volvo any day. But if we were all the same the world would be a very boring place.

To the other poster, I'm not sure how you specced up an SE Tech to over £40k though, we just had metallic paint and full grained leather seats with an auto box and total price with discount was £34235?

My DS is 2 years old, just over 25k miles, HSE SD auto, so far it's been great, came from a FL2 and it's just better in every way, apart from the front seats aren't quite as comfy, the FL2 ones were just a bit more accommodating.
Reliability wise it's been pretty good, one small fault, the interior fan packed in, which is a known issue with the early ones.

The auto box is pretty good, I rarely have to use the paddles, economy is mid-40s the best I've seen is 49.3 which is pretty amazing.

I had a loan of a new RRS when it was in getting the fan sorted, apart from being a bit faster, I preferred the DS, roomier, quieter and comfier for my kind of driving. The RRS boot was useless for my 2 Golden Retrievers, whereas they fit fine in the DS.

Enjoy.

Looks very nice! We pick up our poverty spec se 5+2 manual (my17) up next week. Only options we've chosen are privacy glass and Firenze red. All other options can be sourced far cheaper online including, floor mats which can be had for £22 on ebay instead of the stupid money Land Rover charge.

Ah the rubber matts were thrown in for free along with a full tank of fuel and a bottle of decent champagne for the wife.

Happy days.

:thumbup

(I could spec one to nigh on 60k very easily when I played with the configurator - as I did when trying to do like for like against the XC90...).

As another aside, I'd be tempted to run someone over just to see the bonnet airbag deploy biggrin

Collected my one on the 1st but haven't had time to get out and drive it properly. So today after collecting it from my detailer I took it over some of my favourite local roads. Have to say the dealer was excellent (Peter Vardy Aberdeen) and I hoping for trouble free motoring. Also hoping the fuel consumption gets better after running in as I'm only managing between 27-35 mpg.

Looks nice, agree on the fuel consumption, we are averaging 30mpg and with the tiny tank seem to be forever chucking £50 in it.

What sort of journeys do you take?

I only get approx 27 mpg out of mine, fair enough i have general grabber tyres on it but the mpg is terrible.

I know i do short journeys to work approx 7 miles in traffic but ive had performance cars that did the same journey and averaged about 30 mpg. At weekends it does longer journeys

But apart from that its a great all round car.

School runs and longer trips at weekends for rugby and days out.

Daily school runs are 5-7 miles each way through country lanes with a bit of traffic.

Not getting anything like the 44 mpg claimed by Land Rover

And you won't. I was lent one briefly, and it did 33mpg almost regardless of how I drove it. On a long run I managed to get the on-board thing to read 42mpg, but that was driving like a saint (I misread Google Maps and left an hour earlier than needed)

Short journeys absolutely kill it, 10 miles to and from the office was reading between 26 and 31mpg.

ETA: In their defence, I've yet to see any modern turbo diesel, regardless of make, get what it claims unless it does nothing but sit on motorways at 60-70mph. A highly unscientific survey around my desk today shows everyone gets about 10 less than book, apart from the guy who does north Nottingham to Warwickshire every day who gets close as long as the traffic is moving.
