Hi

I'm about to put down a deposit on the new Discovery. I'll test drive both the 4 and 6 cylinder diesel.

But I just wondered what peoples thoughts on both engines are ? I wont be towing.

On the face of it they look pretty similar on specs. Sales guy insists they are both as quiet as each other.

thx in advance.

I would go for the TD6 but haven't driven either yet. I believe the TD6 is only a single turbo unlike the sequential twin turbo TDV6/SDV6 so might drive differently to current power unit.

Will be interesting to see what the 2.0l is like though as it's a bit lighter. The stats about the weight saving from LR are not really true either. Yes, the 2.0l is 400kg lighter, but the 3.0l isn't much lighter than a D4.

Early tests suggest mpg isn't that great either only slightly improved over a D4. Nothing like the claimed. Nothing new there though!! But it's not first hand info, just initial reviews etc.

Thanks CornishRob

The TD6 is "only" 1500 more.

I've tried to find info on the engine (year designed etc) to work out if it might be replaced soon and how it would stack up to new emissions tests etc.

You wouldnt know where I could find that info ?

The 2.0l does go rather well, much better than everyone is expecting.

Yes, my head is saying the 4 cylinder but heart is saying 6.

There is surprisingly little info on the 6 pot engine - as far as I can tell it is a left over from the BMW days.

Some info here on the engines:

http://www.disco3.co.uk/gallery/albums/userpics/10...

There is a fair bit of info on here:

http://www.disco4.com/forum/discovery-5-l462-vf93....

And here:

https://disco5.co.uk/forum/

But you will have to sieve out the fact vs opinions.

I believe that LR will replace the engine once the Ingenium engine is ready. Not sure when that's due though!

We spoke to the guy at the dealer launch.

£1500 extra for the 6 cylinder upfront.
£5000 better resale value was their prediction.

Get the 6

They are c100kg different for the engines between 2.0 and 3.0 (2184 vs 2298) - and the 2.0 is around 480kg lighter than the outgoing model.

Is that going to be offset by through life costs though in consumption, low tax etc and it also assumes that say in 3-5 years time a larger engined diesel tax does not significantly change and make the bigger older tech 6 pot less desirable...

The 6 is essentially the same as was used in S-Type, RRS & D3 as a 2.7 and XF, RRS2 and D4 as a 3.0. Its roots are Peugeot/Ford, not BMW - RR used a BMW I6 in the early 2000s FFRR, but not since.

It's come in two capacities, single turbo and twin turbo and a variety of power outputs up to 300bhp in the current RRS2 and its a nice thing to sit behind.

Volvo don't give you a 6 cylinder option for the XC90, but I bet there aren't many 2.0d BMW X5s or Audi Q7s out there...

Thanks for the replies. I thought I had decided on the V6 and now I'm not sure again!

This is my worry with the V6 ... it is an old engine and my guess is it will be replaced by an Ingenium V6 in a year or so.

The issue is whether this V6 in 3 years time is going to either be a liability due to emissions/tech and/or it will have been replaced and no one will want "the old V6" model.

It just sounds like a new V6 is around the corner.

Anyone know someone at the engine unit to find out ?!

I presume the 4 pot runs with exhaust treatment, Adblue (injected Urea in the tail pipe) does the V6?

the emissions of the 3.0 an 2.0 are similar so I don't see why this would be a big concern? Given the small price difference I am going for the v6, in an HSE spec it seems safer, while the 2l might well be very good I doubt it will be quieter or more refined than the v6. Test driving the v6 tomorrow, but I would love some more info on how long it will be used before an upgrade would think at least 2 years?

so far tax changes seem to be on new cars so I think that's unlikely as would require not just a clamp down on existing diesels but specifically on larger engined ones with similar CO2 output

Ok, so just came back from test driving the V6 - and have placed an order for it.

The V6 is EU5 standard engine, the 4 is EU6.

The V6 was a bit noisier than I was expecting but it pulled very well. Plenty enough acceleration for such a big car. Having been in a 4 pot Evoque I would say the Evoque was quieter.

I also spoke to a friend this afternoon who until very recently was a JLR salesperson and he recommended the V6. His view was that the 4 pot was having issues as it was new and that the economy figures were very similar in real world driving.

So the big difference is EU5 vs EU6 - https://www.carwow.co.uk/blog/eu5-and-eu6-engines-...

The actual difference being Nitrogen Oxides 0.18 (EU5) vs 0.08 (EU6)

I'm not sure the TD6 has AdBlue/DEF. The 4 pot definitely has DEF.

Thought EU6 was mandated for London from 2020, I suspect other cities will follow on...

I would have thought it's madness for anyone to buy a non-EU6 diesel now if they're looking not to take a smack on the residual value of the car?

Correct.

From 2020 you wont be able to drive any diesel in central London without it being EU6 compliant or paying a surcharge. But it really is the centre of London - from Westminster to the City.

But I doubt it will have that great an effect. Its already prohibitively expensive to drive into the congestion zone as it is.
