I have been driving a 435d for the last couple of years. Everything you could want in a car IMO for what I needed for which is longer journeys mostly motorway with the exception of space.

I needed more space as I'm carrying a lot of gear to customer sites etc so I impulse bought a 2007 RRS TDV8 and I like it a surprising amount. Bought with an 18 month warranty which was handy after it left me stranded on the M60 in rush hour after the alternator died, it was fixed and my brother, a mechanic, has said it's in excellent condition and has been well looked after. However, in the back of my mind I'm worrying about catastrophic problems putting 25,000 a year on it, and often being the other side of the country.

I still found myself picking the keys for it up in the morning, even when not needing to carry things. So I've decided to ditch the BMW and upgrade the Range Rover.

I've preferred the Sport to the FFRR in all shapes, and I've been looking at the later older shape Sports such as this... http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/l...

However, seems an awful lot of money to upgrade what I have now which is probably worth £12k max.

How much more do I have to spend to get into the later shape? Things I should avoid? Things I should definitely be looking for? I know next to nothing about the later shape, which is marginally less than I know about the shape I have now.

Looks like pushing into the £40's gets you into a higher mileage example http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/l...

Am I pushing my luck? Wouldn't want to go much higher than this.

Looks like a lot of cash for a car that looks 10 years old and will probably be as reliable as one. The old shape has aged loads in the past couple of years imo.

That's a good point and something I hadn't really considered.

Might hang on a bit and see how the prices of the new Sport go over the next few months. I'd be more comfortable at sub £40k - any ideas how long it'll take for a decent one to hit this level?

If you read the threads in GG about these then they drop like a stone like all LR products! They are slow to depreciate and there is still demand so I think it will be a while till they go significantly lower than that.

I sold my new shape 63 plate HSE dynamic we th 50,000 miles back to the dealer for £46k dealer put it in forecourt for £50k and it sold in a few weeks. That was around October last year. They hold their value amazingly.

Effectively drove out with a 6 month old Disco 4 graphite 5k miles and £5k in my pocket.

I wonder if the introduction of the Velar might push down the used values on RRS?

Can't speak to the equipment levels, etc. but the cheapest new shape RRS on Land Rover's used car site is a touch over £40k with 62k miles. 45k gives you a bit of choice in colour, spec and mileage. I only mention it as I thought about blowing by budget and getting one, and when I looked I was surprised to find many of the cheaper ones on Autotrader were also approved used cars. No idea if that's still the case, mind you!

It might do as it's a middle ground option.

Saying that velar prices aren't low! I've just ordered a Velar Dynamic R 2.0 petrol HSE with pano and black roof and metallic at £67k.

What about a new shape X5 40d or 50d, basically just your 435d but with the extra space your looking for?

I just done that exact change from a 435d gran coupe and it is just more of the same but with that extra space.

I looked at and drove the RRS and it's the better car if money is no object, I rate it in a class above the X5, love the looks and the sense of occasion, its special no doubt, but in my real world the X5 was just so much better value and that's before you take into account the sharper drive, quicker performance figures, better reliability and much more up to date infotainment all of which you will be used to from the 435d.

Just a suggestion, although I understand if your set on a RRS!

I think you've summed up the two cars pretty well. I've gone X5 3.0d to RRS TdV8 to X6 35d (personally like them) to new shape RRS dynamic 3.0d to Disco 4. I considered x5 again this time but felt spoilt by the previous RRS. Ride (performance) and dynamics better in BMW product but the LR products a nicer place to be in.

I considered an X6M (was very tempting and a considerable discount off list) before ordering the Velar but was held back again by the other benefit of LR products which is that they currebntly hold their value very well.

For your price point, it is a no-brainer to get what I have - a Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit.

90% as good as the RRS, more kit and half the price second hand.

Mine is probably the most complete package I have ever had in a car and, 32k miles in, I am a very happy customer.

Range rovers get face lifted next year... that's when prices should fall.
