Disco 1 is closer to a P38 I think. Actually, they're both very similar underneath anyway.
Nah disco 1 is RR classic, the front door is identical iirc.

Comparing a D2 TD5 with a 110 TD5 what's better about a Defender?
Everything that's crap about a Defender (and there's plenty) can be unbolted and replaced relatively easily.
The worst thing about a Dicovery (rust) can't be easily fixed.
Nicely put.
I also disagree with the idea that a Disco2 can match a Defender off-road simply by way tyre selection.
Maybe those who claim this have in fact been driving a Defender no further than the abilities of a Disco, not realising it still has more to give, much more...way beyond a big, heavy, overhanging D2 with its failed air suspension.

The only reason rust can be easily fixed on a Defender (Chassis is pretty similar and no more protection from the factory)
is the value of a Defender, you'd be mad to spend £3k on a £3000 Disco.
You'd be mad not to spend it on a £15k Defender.

Ok....and that makes the Disco the better car? I must be missing something...

An interesting topic, I'm considering a Disco 2 as a 2nd/3rd car, would want a late manual ES version with light leather interior (poncy I know). Out of interest what's the real world fuel consumption like?

I'd be buying it as a weekend dog car, boat towing and occasional launch and for long continental trips. So are they also refined enough on the motorway for long trips (France/Austria/Slovakia)?

Here's a thread with some other stuff I'm considering:

Which made me start questioning the reliability...

I suppose we are getting a bit pedantic now, I was meaning mechanically rather than cosmetically. Range Rover, P38 and Disco's 1&2 are very very similar underneath.

I have a Hilux double cab for similar duties, I just tax it and put diesel in it. I have other cars I enjoy working on.

I wouldn't take a D2 anywhere near water, much less use it to launch boats.

Nice pic. Did it rust away before you got it out?

Apart from the rust issues, what are they like on motorways/comfort wise for long trips?

They're very comfortable. A bit gutless at 70 plus but they are ok once up to speed.
