Found a decent looking 2002 W211 E55, the seller mentioned it needed pads, however he then said it had a brake warning on the display, would that show as a Brake Wear or is he possibly looking at the SBC needing doing ?

If the SBC needs doing, how much is it and what kind of a job is it to do ? I have seen 2 grand quoted.

Is there a way of telling how many cycles it has left and I have seen stuff about getting the counter reset, is that actually safe, they start with 300k cycles and count down I believe, how many get added ?

Just want to not get a car and then get lumbered with a big bill for what in effect is a bloody stupid idea !

If the SBC warning light comes up then it might be the number of brake pedal pushes. I think its 250,000
On the lower spec cars this can be reset within the the car in the sub menu via star diagnosis.

This has to be done in the GERMAN sub-menu and not just at the ENGLISH level.
I had my 03 plate E270 W211 done last year at MBS Southampton (NOT THE MAIN DEALER but an indie)
Cost 2hrs labour £140 inc VAT.

I don't know whether you would want to do this on a E55. Best thing is to ring MBS and speak to Dave.

Not sure if it is a problem or not yet but dont think it make any odds which car it is as to whether its dodgy, it seems to be down to the lifespan of the brushes in the motor, people have managed to put new brushes in and then reset on star but I think the reality is that it will need £1200 spending in all likelihood.

I had the SBC pump replaced free by Mercedes on my first E class when they were doing them as a goodwill thing. I was told by my Mercedes dealership that a new pump was £750 and labour about £700 so a £1450 job.

Not sure if you can get rebuild kits for the pump?

Bosch has reduced the pump prices; they used to be over £1,200 IIRC. Still a big bill if it needs one though.

There was a "new" Bosche pump on ebay last year for £675.
