I have been looking into the idea of fitting an electric cooling fan to my series 2a. A Kenlowe is arond £140.

Plan B - DIY!

the Ford Mondeo radiator top hose has a fitting for the thermal switch. this is like a 'tee'. the plan is to use this switch and an electric fan to make the system. I will let you know how this works on a Land Rover.

Read somewhere that others have used the whole Mondeo fan and housing setup.

I can confirm that the Mondeo top hose fits perfectly with a little trimmed from each end. That's the temperature sensor in place, the electric fan should just be down to fabricating a couple of mountings.

You can use any electric fan from a scrappy - IIRC Citroen and Peuguot fans are popular.

X-Eng make a neat fan switch housing which fits into the bottom hose as an option to a Mondeo hose.

Remember to wire the fan via a relay to be safe.

And generally the thermostatic switches have a 22mm standard thread, so you can go to your local motorfactors and pick almost any that switches on and off at the temps you want.

I've got an Intermotor switch for my 2.25 series 3 that brings the fan on at 88degC, can't remember the off temp. Switch was about £8.

My fan is half a P38 condenser fan set up (I think) but almost any of a reasonable size will do.

I've also wired an over-ride switch on the dash so I can turn the thing on whenever I like (or in case the thermostatic switch fails, which I've had before on another car resulting in a pricey engine rebuild - call me paranoid!).

If you LR goes out to play then you could wire the stat through a three way switch to the relay.
You can leave it switched on so the fan comes on with the stat
Or
switch it so it comes on overriding the stat.
Or
Switch the fan off when wading so you don't throw water/mud up over the engine. In this position also connect a buzzer/light so that should you forget to switch it back to normal the buzzer/light will warn you that the stat thinks the fans should be on.

further advice please ruari
how did you select a fan switch by temperature? my experience of buying these things is walking into halfords and asking for "a fan switch for...."

can't help wondering if the standard mondeo item might run the engine a bit hot before it kicks in?

Pretty much all stats have a 22mm thread. Some come with terminals, some flying leads or whatever.
If you go to a motor factors and ask to browse the catalogue you will find each of them listed with the opening and closing temperatures. There is quite a wide range depending on where they are installed in different vehicles.

When you find one with the temp you require you may have to accept that the termination method is not ideal but modifiable.
