can someone offer some advice please?

I am fed up thrashing my series to keep up with traffic. I want to know if the differential units from a 90 or a discovery would be a straight swap (i have been told that i'd need to sort out an oil level plug in the diff pan - but this shouldn't be a problem). Are the half shafts and prop shaft fittings the same?

i know about overdrive units - but these cost a fortune and there is a gamble on the condition.

cheers

I thing you'd get a better response on the lro forum or http://forums.lr4x4.com/ a quick google for landrover forums is your best.

You will need 10 spline diffs. so early range rover ones will work. So will early defender ones. I was under the impression that diso's had the 24 spline variation.

Hi,
as "its all yellow" said, you will need 10 Spline type (e.g. 2 door Range Rover classic. Beware though - the low ratio will suffer as you have effectively raised the overall gearing. Coilers can get away with 3.54:1 differentials because they run a much lower low ratio than leafers...

Many, many years ago I had series one with a 2286cc 4 pot petrol which we fitted 3.54 diffs out of an early RR, in low box it would do about 60mph, so the gearing for racing was fantastic, in high on 750x16 tyres it was almost a joke to drive (it was road legal), so I think you may want to think about a 4.3 or 3.9 ratio which we used to get out of the old Rover 90,95,100 and the 105, also the Rover 3Ltr, KAM Differentials Ltd are the people to ask, they are in Godalming in Surrey, tel 01483 419779.

All coil sprung land rovers have 3.54 diffs in them, though the early ones are imperial, up to the early 80s. Later diffs are metric, they have bigger bearings but fit in place of the earlier diff. Only the 300 series Discovery, Range Rover classic (soft dash) and 300TDi Defender had 24 spline diffs prior to the introduction of the TD5/DicoII.

Early diffs had the oil filler in the diff casing , all later diffs relied on a filler being in the diff pan.

But as said the change in ratio will be massive, IIRC the series has 4.7 diffs.

thank you. this is all good stuff.

i think i have now learn't that while the range rover diffs are a good thing on the road, i will now be approaching off-road nasties at 30% more speed!

on the downside this does scupper my plan - but if it saves me wasting money on diffs that i'll end up taking out again....

maybe i now understand why overdrive units come at a premium.

cheers for the good advice.
