Alternative engines

I have read of numerous alternative engines fitted to the old Series Landies over the years BUT has anyone ever fitted a Volvo 4 cylinder?
Reason being, I am possibly breaking a 940 LPT which returns 30mpg and pulls like a train. The old 2.25 Landy motor is a bit expensive to run and whilst I have fancied one for years, I have been put off buying one by the fuel cost.
