Range Rover TD6 IS BMW 3.0D engine, the 2.7 is the Jag engine but with only 1 turbo and is only found in Discovery 3 and Range Rover Sport. The X5 3.0D is faster and better MPG than Range Rover but then so is a 5 Series estate. Range Rover is still the best 4x4 IMHO.
I stand corrected!

Is it the gen 1 BMW engine or did it get the 2004 uprated version later, like the X5?

Rangie has had the 3.0 TD6 since 2002.... it's still the original one.

ok so...do i have this right now.

td6 is 3.0D bmw x5 engine? not as good speed wise and mpg...i'm guessing due to weight difference??
so is the tdv8 is 3.0D also? who manufactures it?

how do both compare with mpg against one another?

TDV8 is 3.6 V8 diesel. Not sure who makes it (for some reason, I think Jaguar), but it is quick, very quick and also pretty frugal (I have heard they get around 28 / 29mpg). TDV8 Rangies still command strong money though.

Steer clear of the TD6, it really is a horrible, agricultural lump

28/29 mpg is a bit optimistic, my long term average over the last 18,000 miles is about 23.5 which is still not bad IMO given the performance and the weightsmile Brilliant engine - suits the car perfectly, loads of torque.

So when was the tdv8 engine put into the frame. Im only looking at a 02 or 03 model. if its not in those models or years, what are my options. Again looking to deisel, provided that the mpg is greater than a beast of 4.6 petrol! Its got to be deisel. what do you recomend. Td6 seems to be popular?

If you are intent on going with the TD6, get DMS to chip it. A couple of guys at work did this & they get much better MPG & more performance

TDV8 didn't appear until late 06/early 07 I'm afraid.

My old 4.6 P38 used to get low-mid teens mpg, my current 2003 4.4 Vogue (BMW petrol engine) averages around the high teens when I'm in it and low 20's when it's my Missus behind the wheel.

Interesting, we're the other way around - despite being faster and harder than her, I get around 21mpg out of the V8 (remember the Diesel has little by way of economy advantage as it'll get 24-25 and costs more per litre...), yet she gets about 17mpg... all down to driving technique and sympathy for the autobox.

Yep, but I think in our case it's due to the differing motorway cruising speeds we like to sit at. There's a chance I might prefer to be a bit more whizzy than her once up to speed, rather than either of us doing full throttle standing starts etc.

I just had a chuckle reading the posts here. It is a Range Rover for goodness sake and people are talking about speed. If you want speed and 0-60 times buy a sports car. It sounds like an episode of Top Gear when speed seems to be the only thing mentioned when talking about a luxury 4x4.

The way to think of a Range Rover is a 4 wheel drive limo, which it is 2nd to none. A Land Cruiser is a great machine for sure but it is not even in the same division as a RR when it comes to ride or image. I remember when the RR had a 2.5 Diesel lump and everyone slated it (rightly so) then when BMW put the 3.0 TD6 in it everyone raged about how great it is. Now the RR comes with a 3.6 TDV8 the TD6 now gets slated laugh Get a petrol version if you like heavy depreciation on a car very few people will look at let alone want. Get a Diesel if you want a car you can actually sell on at a later date.

If you are serious and have your finances sorted out i may be selling my 53 plate Autobiography. it has full LR history MOT'd 2 weeks ago. has all the usual toys you expect heated seats, Sat nav, DVD, rear enteretainment, privacy glass, chrome side bars and vents. The reason i am selling is because i fancy the TDV8 which is a better vehicle but also a lot more money. I will be trading it in against the TDV8 (if the deal goes ahead) if the OP or any other PH'er wants it they can have it for whatever i am bid on it as trade in value. But i will be doing the deal this week if the figures are right, so you will need to have your cash ready.

i agree with everything you have said here, in honesty ive never been a fan of the TD6, ive had a quick go in a TDV8 and it is miles better, not taking anything away from the TD6 and i dont think a Range Rover should be about performance and 0-60 times either but i felt the TD6(unmapped anyway) is just a little bit too lacking, if i was going to buy an early L322 i would get the 4.4 and suffer the economy, if i had enough money for a new Rangie it would be the TDV8.

thanks lads for the advice. I would be interested in your RR, at the right price, so when you get it priced let me know please. Luckily today, I've come across a '06 RR sport, commercial. 38K miles, but he informs me it has a 2.7TD engine???? How does this engine rate? Your also right rearding the speed demons...im into crusing, and boy racers with poxy stripes and huge exausts meerly make me laugh...not bothered at all, but a good come back on mpg is a must!!!!
