I think there is an audio connectivity unit now available from LR dealers for MY2006 onwards which allows full control of the Ipod via the steering wheel buttons. I will be enquiring about it when my TDV8 is next in for a service.

I fitted one of these http://www.ipodcarkitdirect.co.uk/BMW_-_DICE_Silve...
you do loose your CD changer though, there was a Dension version that retained the changer but sadly it is no longer available
Work really well, you use your old CD changer buttons to control it CD1- skips tracks / CD2 - Playlists / CD3 Genres / CD4 artists cant remember the other two as i dont use them
Info for what your listening to comes up in the lcd screen.
I ordered a vehicle specific holder too (£20) but it was big n ugly so threw it away, stick with the standard one that it comes with, much neater.
