Smudgers I had the same...so went for Head Gasket 1st....turned out head was cracked...then still had smoke so changed the oil cooler (it was fooked)........still had some smoke and just about to replace glow plugs!!

So I started with the highest cost solution and moved through to the lowest cost solution...might be worth you going the other way!!

Hi

Sounds like a cracked Head....

They are very common on TD5.

1st thing to do is see weather there is water in the oil, if you are loosing that much it should be ovious. The filler cap or dipstick might even have white sause all over it.

I would get it sorted sooner rather than later if so, as i am sure you are aware water and engine do not mix very well.

Guys thanks for your reply,s.
have found no trace of water in the oil anywhere. but seems to loose about 1/2 a week.
still pulls like a train...has got 165000 on the clock,so dont no if its worth spending to much on this motor.
just got back from town & on start up in bq had the smoke for about a min then it goes ?

regards mike

If no water in the oil then I would go the route I suggested first change glow plugs (£3.55 plus vat each and you only need 4 from Paddocks) if still not fixed then oil cooler...£200 and an afternoons work everything bolts on and then off...........if it were your head you would have water in the oil........I suspect that if you remove the cap off your header tank then it will be a nice oily soup!!

You can download the RAVE manual from www.green-oval.com. They are biggish downloads and you will need a program like alcohol 120% to view the ISO images
