Seriously how can you compare a Jeep five door wrangler to a Forrester / Freelander / Pathfinder type vehicle for day to day driving (read: comfort, speed, handling).

Compared to a Defender there is possibly a case, but come on, really ? as an alternate to a SUV type?
Lighten up! I suggested it first and as 300bhp points out it is a proper off-roader and not a soft-roader. The OP wants options....

Thanks to all comments, all is welcome. The Wrangler is pulling at some old strings. I am trying to keep a level head and keep saying to my self, fuel will only get more expensive, you need to think about costs, of st, then I think, speed, comfort, room for all, and then it all gets to expensive.

If you want a bit more power, why not get a late, low mileage Freelander 2 i6? 3.2 litre straight six petrol engine, sounds sublime and silky smooth. Can do better than 25 mpg average if driven sensibly (but sub-20 if driven in a way that you could never do with the diesel wink )

Stopped selling them in diesel-obsessed UK back in 2008, but you can get a really nice very low-mileage one for less than £25k and most are top-spec HSEs, with ALL the toys. That would be my choice any day...

I have carried two large dogs (Belgian Shepherds) in a Freelander 2, so it ticks that box.

If you are worried about off-road capability, just spend £100 on a half-day at a Land Rover Experience centre and find out - if you find there is anything you want to do with the car that it won't do and its direct competitors will (other than tow more than 2 tonnes of course), ask for your money back!

Freelander 2 may be built by the same company as the original Freelander (sort of - although that was really BMW), it isn't built in the same factory and doesn't use Rover engines! It is one of the most reliable cars on the planet and the factory is one of very very few that have ever won the Gold Award from JD Power for manufacturing quality (Lexus usually win this).

ETA The money you will save on buying it will keep you in petrol for a long time after you would've got fed up of the early morning start diesel clatter wink

They let you do these for free, just register for a brochure on the website and they will send you an invite. I've been on one and since received 2 invites.....

Even better!

Most people are gob-smacked at the off-road capabilities of Freelander and it is, without question, the best Land Rover of all on wet grass (which is the only off-roading most SUVs ever do)!

I've had ours up to the naffs in mud, crossed fords and done a couple of fairly decent greenlanes. The only issues I've ever had are clearance related as I've got the sidesteps on which rob it of a few inches. Other than that it's really not bad, despite the really road orientated tyres. With a set of ATs on I reckon it'd be pretty handy. It was also utterly faultless in deep snow and ice smile

Just swapped out of my 2010MY RR Sport into a new 2010MY FL2. Not missing the Sport at all! The FL2 is a fabulous piece of kit, went for an HSE Auto and it is very comfy, smooth and quiet on the road. The space inside is excellent.

LR are doing 2 yr 0% APR on FL2's with a 60% deposit. £20k will get you in a new HSE auto........

to keep you all updated, will have on loan for the weekend a FL2 so will be very interesting to live with one for a couple of days.

I have on loan a Audi Q5S at the moment and hate it. Hope the FL2 will be more interesting to drive

Will let you know how I get on next week

If you've got a good bumpy b-road that you use regularly try taking the FL2 over there, or some speedbumps. I'm not sure if there's different dampers on different models but my only criticism of ours is it can be a smidgen on the jarring/crashy side over the bumps. It's not a problem for me but it's probably worth pointing out.

The interior lets it down IMO. Has a cheap feel. The seats are also to wide for me, find myself slipping around in them when cornering or/and hard on the gas or brakes. The turbo lag also annoying, driving position to van like for me.

You would not believe the trouble I had in getting a loan fl2 for a demo drive more than half an hour. Wanted to try one for the weekend as it is a large invenstment and want to make sure it is right for me. Anyway, ended up going to two different dealers plus a complaint to the customer services to get a drive for a day.

Contrast:

Walked in to an Audi dealer today and was immediately offered a weekend test drive. Snapped it up and have postponed the fl2 test drive for another time.

What a difference in dealerships

Just to let you know I am testing the A6Q estate

Conversely the landy dealership round here is cracking, and I wouldn't give either of the Audi dealerships the time of day as their attitude stinks.

Why don't you just hire one for the weekend if you want to be certain it is right for you?

I really don't see why dealers should be expected to offer a free weekend loan of cars to everyone that asks, do you?

Maybe Audi have to work a little bit harder to sell their cars? wink

It's called a Demonstrator, and they all have them. Usually they try and keep them for themselves to drive smile But they are provided by the manufacture just for the purpose of demonstrating the car to the customer.

If they only have one do you really think they want it tied up all weekend with a single customer?
