I'm sick and tired of running around to pick up a ringing phone only to find out it is one of the PPI wes who have got my number on auto dialer. I'm sure millions of others have the same problem, but is there any way of stopping these calls coming in? Obviously my ex-directory status does not bar the random auto number dialer methods these tcensoredts use and I'm running out of expletives to use on the callers (I know it's not their fault and they're just doing the job they were employed for), but when asked to be removed, they just hang up, only to call me again later. I wish the banks/government would hurry up and put a 'statute of limitations' on PPI claims, so that the rest of us can be left alone and not be harrassed by these speculating scum suckers.

You should register with the TPS http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/index.html

Has worked well for me.

Hi,

You need to be a little more tougher with them!

Few years ago, I started working from home and the amount of calls through the day was crazy. What I did was quite simple, but it does entail you using a stronger tone of voice but nothing over the top!

Listen to their opening sales patter etc, then when you have a chance, politely ask for their name, their supervisors name and company address details then say, 'Please take my number OFF your database or make a note NOT to call me again, if you do, I will speak to my solicitors as it's against UK law to call someone back once they've given you clear orders not to do so'

That usually sorts it out and they won't call back. I reduced all these stupid calls over a timeframe of perhaps 2-3 months. I'm not on the TPS site although I'll probably do that as well for a little extra shielding. Overall, I'm happy at the 2-3 max a day I will get sometimes - not every day etc so perhaps over a week, i'll get perhaps 5-8 calls? or sometimes none at all.. today I thought I had one but turned out to be a call from a company I do trust and have had work done by previously, as soon as she announced who she was from, no bother at all.

Another thing which I may well look into is the call screening service offered by some Telco's. A caller has to state their name into the system, and then your phone will ring. When you answer you get to hear the person saying who they are and then an option to either accept or decline. I suspect 99% of these idiot callers will not leave their name, any that do may just say 'paul' etc, at which time you'll probably decline the call. If they say 'Robert from PPI claims help company' you'll probably reject the call.

You'll then have a much more relaxed day smile

Cheers, Dennis!

I doubt that would work now, as I'd of thought the person on the end of the phone will be trained not to give out their companies name. I could be wrong though.

I've on TPS and I still get 3-4 a day. Often they're international numbers so TPS doesn't work.

I get PPI, loft insulation grants and people "not selling anything, just doing a survey". Oh and "your computer has a virus" about twice a week. I don't speak to them now, I just put the phone down.

Not sure if you're aware, but BT have a service where (if you sign up for TPS) they throw in caller ID FOC - makes screening nuisance calls much easier. You can also set some phones so they won't audibly ring if it's a withheld number calling.

Alternatively just do what I do: assume that anyone I actually want to speak to has my mobile.

it is my mobile i get the dodgy calls too..........I do ignore all calls to it that are blocked or unrecognised and then ring back if I get a message.

I'm also on TPS, and get these calls all the time. Today I have had two loft insulation grant calls and a PPI call. And a Sky box insurance call.

TPS is almost a complete waste of time, in my experience.

We moved house a couple of months ago - old phone number registered with TPS, a lot of 'sales' calls.
New number not registered with TPS no calls. scratchchin

Like others I get calls to my mobile about 3 times a week. I just say no thanks and end the call, quick and simple.

WRT home phones - we have caller display but at the moment are answering all calls (job hunting), yesterday got an 'out of area' call (get this when my mate in Cyprus rings), it was from Anglian Water in Huntingdon -how do they do it?

First call from a company I tell them I'm not interested and ask them to remove my number from the list - I am on TPS

Second call from the same company I tell them that I've already asked for my name to be removed, and that if they call a third time I will be extremely rude and abusive to them.

I realy enjoy third calls smile

Funnily enough, I don't seem to get many fourth calls ......

Mrs Puggit rang the landline this morning as I hadn't got around to switching my phone on. Her first word, uttered through quite a poor Bluetooth set while driving, was 'nobody'. I hung up.

She rang back again straight away to bk me hehe

Hi Paul,

As I mentioned, you need to be a little 'tougher' !

They are inconveniencing you so don't be a push over !

As the post above shows, give them warnings from your side, I've never had to be abusive or use swear words. To get the information out of them you say you are interested in the product but first need to know their name, managers name and business name and address. They should give you that information. At that point, tell them you wish to not be called by them and if they do so, you will be in touch with your solicitors. These companies know that once they've been asked they must comply according to UK law. Of course, the current nuisance of calls from abroad won't stop, if you are getting them. 2 weeks ago I got the infamous 'your computer is infected with a virus' so I kept them for around 20 minutes deliberately saying I don't see this or that. In the end the guy swore in Indian (I'm Indian as well!) and disconnected the call, about 20 seconds later they called back and were shouting swear words, so i just left the phone by my side - for about 3 mins I could hear various sounds from the phone speaker and then they stopped and hung up. I've not been bothered since.

Do check on those call screening options if provided by your telco!

Cheers, Dennis!

The ones I get are recorded messages, 3 or 4 a day at least, they usually start with 'This is an important message' or 'Don't hang up...'.

When my daughter was with me for the day pretending to be a secretary (which apparently means wearing a short skirt and high heels...) she transferred a call through to me saying they wouldn't give their name and was a bit embarrassed when I pointed out she had been talking to a recorded message.

Depending on my mood and there accent , i find them a good vent for swear words. The best was explaining what a "cock jockey" was to someone, and them replying that they had other calls to make.

TPS works ok'ish for me.
