Many many years ago I seem to remember that it is illegal to quote ex-Vat prices to domestic customers and yet there are many trades which still do this. Is that right or did I dream it?

You dreamt it.

It's against the Advertising Standards Agency's code to advertise ex-vat prices to the general public.

Stuff sold in shops to the public has to inc VAT according the Price Marking Order (law) but there are quite a few exceptions.
