I thought most people when knowing they were going on holiday, booked a mobile hairdresser for a few days before they were due to take off. Atleast that's what I have always known.

A mobile hairdresser? I must be so old fashioned, I just go to the barbers. hehe

Most of the major airports don't charge rent (as such) but a percentage of takings - this is why you have to show your boarding pass if you buy so much as a KitKat. The percentage is very high which is why most of the shops you find airside either sell very high value items (with corresponding high margins) or shift lots of stock all day (such as WH Smiths).

You also need to take into account that the shop would need to be open from 6.00am to 11.00pm which is at least two rotations of staff each day.

It's not a bad idea but as someone else mentioned, there is likely to be a very good reason why they don't exist at the moment.

I wonder whether it's because there aren't really that many big chain hairdressers? Concessions in airports are usually big concerns, and perhaps people just haven't had the idea?

I think that at an enormous airport like Heathrow, especially where people are transferring and have a few hours to kill, it could be a winner. Set yourself up with a comfy waiting area with plush sofas, free coffee, and a TV not showing CNN on mute, and you could be on to something.

The shop would need a very high end fit out and that would cost, all will need to be approved by the airport.
Doesn't need to be high end as such, the WH Smiths in terminals look just as st as they do everywhere else in the country.

Fitting out in airports costs for a number of reasons;

1 - everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, has to go into off site holding for 24 hours before it's let into the terminal which is a massive pain in the arse. A contractor will charge double handling for that.

2 - all materials will need to be class O which is just nonsensical as there's combustible material all over the air side terminals

3 - works have to be carried out 'out of hours' so you'll have a window of about 5-6 hours a day and that includes deliver from off-site holding to work face

4 - all site staff have to be security checked, which is another pain in the arse

5 - airport approvals (as mentioned above) are a third pain in the arse, the last time I did an airside fit out it took over 6 months to get all the relevant signatures for approval

I like the idea particularly for transit stops. The occasional long haul journeys I do on business typically involve stop overs of about 2 hours and in the absence of shower facilities having a haircut/wash/shave would be refreshing and kill some of the time.

as a slight aside... it always puzzles me that none of the barbers round my way don't open in the evening or on Sundays

I think quite a few round here do a late opening at least one day a week.

Another I know opens Sundays, but they charge £2 more on a Sunday.

Yep (unless you live in Southall!) Mine even closes early on Saturday!
