Slightly OT, but still related.

Has the new tax rule reduced the amount of solo traders posing as private sellers? I'm assuming most of them brought cars from auction with some tax/test and quickly turned them round from home as "private seller".

Surely now if they have to tax the car themselves it adds another expense to their likely smallish returns? I was under the impression getting trade plates is pretty tough without proof of trading (and by providing this will leave a paper trail to hmrc etc that you're doing it for profit.
Hopefully.

Sadly, in my experience, applying for a first set of trade plates isn't actually as difficult as it used to be....
I suppose alarm bells would start to ring when you turn up to view a private sale and the seller slaps on a set of trade plates for the test drive :P

Either way - a reduction in these types of "traders" is good for everyone IMO; it stops the prices being dragged down for legitimate traders who have actual overheads and legal obligations, and it should improve the buying experience of private punters smile

Do you have to have planning permission from the local council in order to trade from a garage at home? As in you apply to use your garage as a trader in cars if your to become a trader ?

In most cases - yes.

It can vary from council area to council area. But I have seen cars with Prohibition Stickers placed on them by our local council.

They are most concerned about "trade" cars being parked on streets.

If you have enough private off road parking to store any cars you have and don't annoy your neighbours / spill oil everywhere / etc then I can't imagine it's too much of a concern

Unless your house is rented in which case your landlord is very likely to already have a clause in the tenancy prohibiting it.

What if there kept in a garage off the public road ? Until someone is interested and then taken off the street where i live would the citizens advice bureau be the right people to ask about all this?

In all seriousness, if you keep everything in a garage and aren't running into problems with untaxed cars on public roads or excessive numbers of parked cars in the street etc I can't see it being an issue.

Get trade insurance, get trade plates, tell HMRC what you're doing.

Thanks for that just want to keep everything above board so you don't need to inform the council of the use of your garage as a trade garage ?

Speak to your local council, I imagine it's different all over the country.

Agreed.

The only way to know for sure what the local council's attitude to this form of home trading is to speak to them.

Yes but he is running a trade from home legit as a trader, probably owns his house too so as long as he complies with noise regs isn't going to bother the council. You would suspect that most who want to 'sell a few cars from home', are looking to make a few quid on the side ie without letting hmrc know , which is becomming much harder to do.

8/10 - although enjoyable, you could do better.

The full stop at the end let you down and there weren't enough spelling errors.
