Cheers, I have definitely taken onboard the idea that I should be charging a deposit to cover the cost of materials.

I don't need to email contracts out and have them sign/scan/return as I will have to do a site visit to measure up before I order anything. I can get a signature and deposit at that point.

that can work well
- go to their site
- measure up
- show them options
- get them excite
- when they ask what the next steps are: sign here / pay deposit / fix date smile

I'm a keen e-Shopper/social media user, but from a customer point of view I would hope that any contact I would have with you over Facebook would be an initial one, just to get the ball rolling.

Anything from you providing me a quotation onwards I would expect to be through a more formal medium - either a typed snail mail quote, or (my preferece) an emailed quote, with all your T&C's, and a commitment to me paying a deposit. That way I take you seriously as a business.

All my customers pay up front for hardware, regardless of product or how long I have known them.

As has been stated, motorised blinds are custom made and therefore outside of the distance selling rules. It is just that asking for a £4k deposit for 8 blinds can make you feel like a fool the first few times you do it to customers.

Trust me, it gets easier.

Just had a look at your website Vex.

Things have moved on a bit since I used to be in that game! In the early 90's I used to work in the states for a company that did custom installs of Dolby and THX systems. I remember installing a 120" rear projection screen in one house, it involved getting builders in to build a room about 10ft x 10ft to house the mirrors and projector hehe

The biggest TV available was a 40" CRT that took about three people to unbox..

I thought the systems back then looked and sounded impressive but with 3d sound and vision and the higher definitions available now I bet they are bloody incredible!
