To grow the business I need a sales person, but don't need a full time person, perhaps 2 days a week. Would rather someone good and expensive (who comes with a contacts list of MD's and FD's who'll give him/her the time of day, for a few hours a week than someone average pay but poor results full time.

I'll also recruit a graduate marketing person to support them so the sales person can concentrate 100% on chasing up leads/referrals etc.

Does anyone know the best place to find someone? Obviously I can put an ad on a job board like Monster or I can engage a local recruitment consultant, but looking for other ideas? Thanks.

Not sure if someone good, expensive and with a book full of contacts would want to work a few hours a week?

You could check LinkedIn, most of the unemployed ones will have 'seeking new opportunities' or some such rubbish. But then they are unemployed...

Or to take a different angle, where would I look for someone who is genuinely good at sales, has time available/isn't working and could do some hours a week? It's a long shot but all the best saleswomen who have babies presumably use baby and toddler type groups...

I think the realistic answer is to do it yourself.

If this person is trying to do valuable / high level deals, how are you going to get around him saying on the one "... and I only work Mondays and Tuesdays"

I don't really see how that could possibly work.

I think if I was the salesperson I'd just go with the assumption you wanted my rolodex but weren't actually willing to pay what its worth (my full time salary).

Sounds like you need someone who is semi-retired; just sold their own business perhaps.

So a part time salesperson, but a full time marketing person? You could get away with a part time marketer, but a sales person will need to be available pretty much 24/7 if they're doing account management.

Also worth looking into hiring a Non-Exec, if you want business advice, contacts and someone part-time.

In terms of a part-time sales person, it would help to know a bit more about the industry you work in, I run a recruitment company so am happy to offer advice on where to look and backgrounds to consider.

I tend to agree with others that true sales is a full time job. As for where to find the right person? One of your competitors usually has them.

Go to a good agency who do demand generation, they can create and grow a list of leads for you, sometimes with a funded head who just works on your stuff a few hours a week or as much as you want to pay, then strike up a commission deal with them or have them pass over the stuff that's ready to close

If you want someone to come in who just has the contacts, makes the intros and hands you over the business for a few hours a week, they are out there, but they're usually ex C level guys who do a bit of consulting on the side, it's not sales though, it's strategic stuff. IE no doorknocking
