Email at the weelend...

So who looks at email at the weekend?

Would be interesting know if they are senior / junior / self-employed and whether large firms or small firms as this may make a difference....

And yes - I'm in trouble for reading email on a weekend....

Always keep an eye on it, try not to get dragged into doing too much about it.

Big corporate business in a senior, but non board level role.

I enjoy my job so see it as all part of the fun...

I do, commercial/ corporate banking deal team. Only on the blackberry, do it to keep my mind at rest.

As above - keep a cursory look when I've got a moment, but keep out of things and only intervene if I can avert a problem becoming worse.

Always. My wife is worse. We both work in education so have the summers off. She checks hers and the general email daily(!). I do mine every few days while on holiday.

Otherwise we only have a backlog when you go back on day one.

I normally check on Saturday morning before everyone is up and again Monday before leaving for work. At least then nothing catches you by surprise.

I read mine on a Sunday night quite often, to delete a lot of the "internal spam". My threshold for writing a work email on the weekend is quite high - it has to include the phrase "...is on fire" before I'll hit reply.

I'm in a very junior management position, with 8 reports.

Uh, yes. I check every morning around 7am and then throughout the day. And the work mobile too. I also quite often reply or have telecons of a weekend.

Look at emails via a work phone or computer? I always check my phone on weekends for work emails. Its not that I would reply but more the fact I hate notifications on my Blackberry flashing away. I like to keep my phone notification free. So in answer to the OP's post yes I check emails at weekends because I have notification OCD.

For my online retail business I'm pretty much glued to emails, especially order notification ones

I do reply sometimes, and I do sometimes process orders, especially on a Sunday night if I know I'm going to be really busy on Monday. I'm trying to avoid it as much as I can though.

For my installation business, I tend to avoid them at the weekends as they only bring disappointment and stress!

I look at mine at the weekend if I get a chance - difficult to avoid really as they are set up to notify on my personal phone whenever I go online (g/f usually gives me grief if she sees me checking it). I chose to have work emails set up originally so I could check my outlook diary out of the office when arranging repeat medical appointments, but now find it useful for dealing with things when not in the office/being prepared for when things hit the fan on Monday morning etc. None of my peers have it though, and overall I am sure I could do my job without it.

I am middle management I guess.

This, right down to the job Bed tends to live on the bedside table most of the weekend and I'll check it occasionally. I'm fairly junior so don't usually need to reply, I just like to keep track of what's going on.

Only if i am logging on to do work anyway - which i always try to avoid.

My job is hard enough on home life as it is, there is a point at which you have to draw a line. Not least being that i am very busy at weekends anyway so even if i were seeing an urgent e-mail it's not likely i will have the time to deal with it and it will only fester.

Nope, phones and email go off at 17:00 on a Friday and get checked about 08:45 on a Monday. I've always been keen to keep work and my own time separate. Once you reply out of hours people develop an expectation, if they know you're closed they will wait until Monday.

I tensd to be at work until about 7ish most nights as between 5pm when the main phones go to night service and then is the best time for catching up on work that requires some concentration without the phone going or people stepping into my office or Clients dropping in.

A few Clients work this out and so try calling after 5 on my direct dial. Most of the time I will answer but it does remind me why it is i refuse to have work e-mail on my phone.

I'd say hourly/every other waking hour - every day of the year.

By replying to emails in "real time" it makes my Mon-Fri a lot more manageable.

This is very relevant for me at the moment.

On Friday I smashed (by accident not temper) my iphone and now it won't turn on. I've spent a whole weekend without it.

Before I would check my emails every hour or so at the weekend. When people want to make a large online purchase I don't want to give them time to go cold on the idea.

With the phone out of action I have to physically be at home and fire up the laptop. I think i checked my mail once this weekend and the weekend was probably far more pleasurable for my wife and kids.

Every hour of every day whether i'm at work or not, wife confiscates the phone when we are on holiday so I cannot look.

In fact we were in the yorkshire moors in August as she was not pleased when out on a pleasant walk and when we got to the top a hill i suddenly got service and sat down and started doing emails

Used to because everyone else did.

Changed jobs to a more senior role in a different company and now set an example by not checking. Rest of the team are slowly coming round to the concept of 'leave work at work'. Think this would be different if I was in Ops rather than a support function.

Never at the weekend - never have, never will. I wouldn't be able to relax otherwise. I used to have staff who would work at weekends, and I never understood why. I never asked them to, and I certainly didn't think more of them for doing it. More fool them!
