There is a setting in the new iOS9 called “WiFi Assist”.

This new built-in feature automatically switches between the Wi-Fi and mobile data network to provide the best data connection to the user at all times. If the connection between the iPhone and the wireless router is weak (ie you are upstairs and the router is downstairs etc) then the iPhone automatically switches to mobile data and uses that instead of the WiFi. Some users are experiencing a significant increase in data usage after iOS9 upgrade, even though there is no change in their browsing habits.

If you have iOS9 go into Settings, Mobile Data (may be labelled as “Cellular” on older iPhone 4 and 5), scroll right to the very bottom and turn off “WiFi Assist”. It is turned on as the default!

Any impact on cost will depend on your own data contract/plan.

Nasty trick and really should have been highlighted on the upgrade notes and been an "opt-in" by choice, not default - can see some users racking up £hundreds before realising!

BTW it only applies to I phone 5 and 6 - not any earlier versions as they don't have the "Wi-fi Assist" setting even after the IOS 9 and 9.1 upgrade.

If you want to turn off:

Settings
Mobile Data
Scroll to bottom of next screen and switch to Wi-Fi Assist to off - job done.

Extra sharp practice putting the opt out at the bottom so its not obvious when entering the screen.

Worth checking cellular I-pads - I don't have one to see if it applies on those as well.

A mate told me about this yesterday and turned it off.
I did notice the night before when using the phone upstairs that it went onto normal data instead of wifi and it all became apparent.

Wonder how many complaints Apple will get from disgruntled customers when they have been charged for excessive data usage.

Found this the other day, as I'd somehow gone through my data allowance for the month! Have turned it off now, but it's annoying to say the least. You don't think about data use when on wifi, obviously. frown
