Hi guys,

Thought I’d start a project thread for my daily driver as some may be interested. It’s a Fiat Grande Punto T-Jet Sporting (1.4 Turbo)

I bought the car last spring as something to use day to day, and that my girlfriend could also learn to drive in (she was a late starter). Plus I’ve always liked the look of the Grande Punto’s, I even had a 1.2 8v mk2 for my first car when I was 17 (11 years ago now, how time flies!).

I originally intended to keep it completely standard, however I like to mess around with my cars a bit and temptation finally got the better of me… It’s already had a set of Weitec Hicon GT coilovers, Abarth front lights, and some Abarth 500 Petal alloys off a mate who had a set lying around; They were in pretty bad condition though, so I just got him to paint them grey. The wheels and lights will be as far as I’ll go cosmetically.

This is how the car started:

This is with the lights, wheels and coilovers (the car is on 205/40/17 tyres here from the 500 so the arches look a little empty; I’m going to swap these for the proper 205/45/17’s):

I’m also currently half way through installing these bits:

The turbo is a TD04L-13T from an Impreza WRX (genuine turbo, not a Chinese copy) with manifold adapter and downpipe to suit, an Airtec intercooler, cams from a n/a 1.4 16v Fiat and 380cc injectors (not shown). Once these bits are on it will be getting a 2.5” downpipe back mandrel bent exhaust system.

The car has been given a full going over including fresh head gasket, belts, oils etc. so it should be running in top condition.

Cheers guys, updates to follow shortly.

UPDATE 14/04/17 - Finished project (possibly)

Hi guys,

Thought it was about time I updated this thread!

Here's the car again as it stands today.

Final spec list:-

Engine:
Hybrid TD04L turbo with 19T compressor wheel
Cams from 1.2/1.4 16v n/a Fiat FIRE engine
Airtec intercooler
380cc injectors
Wossner forged pistons
Shot peened stock rods
Full 2.5" exhaust w/ 200 cell cat and 2 boxes to keep the noise down

Chassis:
17" Speedline Chrono wheels - changed from the previous set as they wouldn't fit over the brakes plus they look better and they're lighter! Function over form.
Weitec Hicon GT coilovers
Brembo M4x40 front calipers with 305mm discs.
Forge subframe braces

And here's current dyno result - blue line (red line is a previous map).

Just under 250bhp and 230lb/ft at the minute running at 1.3 bar of boost. Being forged the engine is good for more but it seems like the stock actuator is struggling to keep the internal wastegate shut from exhaust pressure alone at high revs as the boost is creeping down to about 1.1 bar - this turbo should easily be able to hold 1.3bar and more to redline.

The current spring was only good for about 4psi when we tested the car using wastegate spring pressure alone (taking the elctronic boost control duty cycle to 0). So the next step, if i can be bothered, is to fit an uprated wastegate actuator and go for a map tweak; should see about 260hp then hopefully.

The car is really fun to drive just as is it though, a little bit old school turbo which is rare on modern small capacity turbocharged motors, and is just what I wanted. It pulls hard to over 7000rpm and really shifts when you wring it out as it doesn't weight much more than a tonne.

Contrary to what the torque curve looks like on the dyno, it's also fine just pottering around at low revs - just as smooth as stock, but a completely different animal up the rev range.

I love these Puntos.
and I'll be watching this thread with interest.
All good so far! (apart from the alloy wheel finish, for me personally the darker and matt'er the colour the cheaper they look...just me tho smile )

They're brilliant little cars!

I'd look at getting the Abarth rear lights too, they're a direct bolton and look quite a lot better (imo) than the originals. Here's a pic of my old T-Jet with them fitted.

Any thoughts on brakes? I've heard the GP Abarth ones fit directly? A mate of mine had a VXR injectors and it was hard to get mapped, he fitted the Astra VXR ones in the end.
Cracking cars, I do still miss my old, yobby blue one!

I agree, I love mine! Just wasn't a fan of the standard diesel like power delivery (standard turbo is tiny!)

I probably will end up with a set of Abarth rear lights, but that will definitely be the end of the cosmetic mods.

Forgot to include the brakes in my original post... I have a set of the Brembo's off a Mito 155 (same as the Abarth Grande Punto) ready to go on once I've given them a refurb.

Awesome thread!

What sort of power are you looking for? I ran a Impreza with a a TD04 for a few years and always enjoyed the responsiveness of it. My car made 271bhp before I retired it.

This car is going to surprise a few people! smile

I'm hoping for about 250hp and 240lb/ft.

Do you have any idea at what point in the rev range the TD04 will start producing serious boost? Also any ideas how much boost you plan to run it at?

It should be at full boost by 3500rpm. I'm planning to run 1.5bar, which it should be able to hold to 7000rpm redline. I want to have plenty of power at the top of the revs; as standard it's pretty much done by 4500-5000rpm, and I hate that sort of power delivery! The standard turbo is tiny.

Hi,

I am planning to do a same setup on my punt T-jet. Can you tell me which 1.4 16v cams fit is t-jet, what is the engine code. It is really hard to find one on eBay and also in Hungary. Where did you get yours?

Thx
David

You should be fine with cams from the n/a 1.4 16v (90hp version) of the FIRE engine - found in plenty of Fiats such as the Stilo and Punto Mk2b Sporting. You need to use the cam sprocket from the n/a cams.

The cams from the more powerful 1.4 16v Starjet engine (100hp) aren't compatible I don't think because of the VVT on that engine.

Thanks! Yeah I've thought about an LSD, traction isn't actually too bad out of first gear as it is at the minute though to be honest. However, I may stick one in at some point in the future along with a bigger turbo laugh ... it never ends!

Just read your Saab thread, great car! Upgraded in a similar vein to this in a way.

To get more boost pressure you'll need to change the boost sensors to the Abarth Essesse spec ones! They will give you 1.5 bar.

Wow, that's some impressive power gains - 120bhp standard? Roughly how much did the power mods cost?

Won't NA cams have more overlap and end up blowing fuel out the exhaust?

Most of the standard cars on the Fiat forum are putting out 135-140BHP and one was said to be 147 BHP so the 120ps figure is a bit of a manufacturers smokescreen to get a cheaper insurance group I'd say!
