One UK based one that is worth a look is bluepark. They are a little bit more expensive than shopify but the support is excellent and they support most of the main payment gateways.

I liked them when I was with them, chose them over shopify and bigcommerce.

If people aren't using Shopify/Big Commerce, what other platforms are available? I'm looking to launch a niche fashion product in Sept - only a limited range but with colour size variations, etc. What would people recommend?
Try Squarespace...

https://www.squarespace.com

You can knock up a decent looking website that looks very professional in around 4 hours.

It's designed so you don't need to 'build' a site. I'd suggest looking into other more flexible platforms though if I were you, as they'll allow you to grow the site as you expand.

I've just fired you a quick email John – I'm sure we can help, or point you in the direction of someone that can.

Cheers,

Just use Shopify, I used to agree with gizlaroc, but it has got a lot better over the last couple of years. Once they support multiple storefronts I'll probably move all of my sites over.

The key is use a decent theme and the customise it, out of the box/free ones aren't very good, but get a reasonable paid one and fiddle a bit, or pay someone else to fiddle, and you can have something very decent looking for a couple of hundred pounds. You'd be surprised at some of the websites out there which are actually Shopify sites.

Look at Magento then use
Shopify with a clothing (size / colour ) plug in will do it quite economically and the payment gateway is built in.

I have gone the other way.

I have closed my Shopify store today, and will open with squarespace next week.

I will let you know if it is a mistake! biggrin

I think a custom build would have done the trick, we are in the middle of a beauty site that will look better easily as good as a none theme magento site for a fraction of the cost. At the end of the day a template site is only as good as the quality of theme and the range of extensions available.

Remember copied content is not Google friendly, a tech spec is ok but the article description should not be copied from the suppliers site.

Nothing really to report back.
It seems to do what I want from it, and happy with the look, it was really a test as we swapped over with only a few weeks left of the season so we will launch properly in August.

I suppose it is OK to post a link as there is not really any product on there worth talking about at the moment, and none reduced online currently either even though everywhere is in sale, so won't be classed as advertising.

But this is squarespace. That took two days to do from scratch (although a couple more to add variations, ie sizes etc.)
I think it allows you to build a pretty decent looking site pretty quickly, and the back end is very easy for my staff to understand...

www.middletonsclothing.com

This is what comes up when the staff click on one of the products, which allows them to check/adjust stock levels etc. if they sell it in store..

I have started using Vend POS as well, which annoying does integrate with Shopify.
If I had known I was going to start using that I would have probably stuck with shopify, but Vend are talking about Squarespace integration, so fingers crossed.

[quote=_MIKE_]I'm currently in the middle of building a shopify site and had a few hiccups, but that was purely lack of knowledge on my part having never done something like this before.

One question I have, currently I'm still using the 30 day free trial whilst I put it together, and I have linked the domain I bought from godaddy to it (after watching a YouTube video as I was stuck) but my store still goes to the shopify domain rather than my .co.uk. Is this because I haven't yet signed up to a plan? If I type in my .co.uk it just says store opening soon.

Whilst writing your content is it best to try and include as many keywords as possible throughout all of the pages to help with people searching for products on Google?

Sent you a PM - on checkout delete the text that says "all info will be sent to America" or similar - it's a checkout killer
