So after working for 8 years with an accountant who was a friend of my Father in law and nearing/past retirement, he's now said we've really grown too big and too complex for him to carry on looking after us.

So, we need to find a new accountant but have no idea how, every other professional we've needed we've gone on personal recommendation so I guess PH is as good a place as any to start.

(We're a small limited company based in the Midlands with a PAYE employee in the Travel/Property sector)

Anyone any recommendations?

You don't necessarily need anyone local - we have clients of all sizes all over the country and overseas that we service from a single office in Scotland, but for smaller organisations I think it is preferable to have someone close by as it makes communication more straightforward.

If you don't get personal recommendations from here, then are you active in local enterprise groups or trade associations of any kind, attend seminars or training with similar organisations? Always a useful source for recommendations, particularly if you are in a specialist sector.

Important considerations for an accountant are that they are qualified and also are proficient in tax planning as that is a key requirement that is often overlooked and one where you need someone proactive.

Bravo to your existing accountant for recognising their limits and being honest about it.

Some would have carried on taking the money and done a poor job.

Totally.

Personally I'd ask him for a recommendation, it may be that he is happy to do the transaction work and could outsource the parts he's not so comfortable in.

Hey OP...

We're west midlands based too, so have some contacts, depending on your size/requirements I can highly recommend Lisa Dixon (http://www.lisadixon.org.uk).

If you're in need of more assistance on the book-keeping side, then likewise, I can highly recommend Ken Bell (Very good on the Xero side of things and helping you to manage as much as possible internally, which may or may not be a benefit depending on the above): http://kenbellaccounting.co.uk/

Ken also co-owns another accounting firm, specialising in property too: http://www.propertyaccountanthere.co.uk/

Have worked with both Lisa and Ken and would highly recommend in both instances, hope that helps smile

Cheers,
Tristan.

Try Duncan Sharrock at CFW and Co. He is one of the partners. They are based just outside Kettering so not far from your location I think. We have a relatively complex manufacturing business and he has served us well. Reasonable costs but more importantly very competent and also honest. Hope that helps
