I'm pretty sure what you are getting is either tip vibration or the tip angle is too shallow & its not cutting which means it burring over leaving the marks you see.

I'd try setting the tip angle more aggressively & see what happens.

I'm no expert but have done plenty of it in my time

Heard a story today about a guy who had a wheel lathe, not sure of make, but he was producing outstanding work, except on a Thursday, and only a Thursday.

They spent almost 3 months trying to work out what was wrong, including setting up webcams so the company who built the lathe in the USA could watch him , still no luck.

It was then discovered that the next unit along from him was a printers, and their biggest machine was just the other side of the wall, I'll let you guess what day of the week they fired it up.

The concrete floors were so thin that the printing press was shaking the lathe, they lifted the lathe and sat it on 10mm rubber washers, problem solved.

Now, we don't have a printers next door, so I know it's not that, lol, but just goes to show how sensitive these machines can be, and as another previous poster said, you sometimes really need to think outside the box.
See the above bolded before flaming me, but could a(n?) harmonic ressonance cause that effect? (Chatter? - I don't know how else to describe it.)

Might need to look at your tips, i'm pretty sure you do in fact. How are you even "dressing" them? What holders are they in? What are the holders made of? What rockwell is the material you are cutting? What is the draft angle on the tip?

I used to make tools for me family business and can OPG grind. Let me know if you need help.

This is naturally all said on the basis you have followed past advice in this thread.

Oh, just a thought but have you checked the chuck is not out slightly? Put the wheel in spin it with a gauge on a magnetic stand to check if its out a few thou. Then after taking the wheel off close the chuck fully and position the gauge on the chuck about 10mm inside the outside edge on the face. This will tell you if both the bed the chuck fits on is perfectly flet and also if the chuck is calibrated or possibly knackered

I'd have to agree. I'd give Kennametal a call and try their inserts in one of their holders. What make are you using?

Have a word with the machine supplier and ask to get in touch with another customer of theirs, maybe even drop in to see them and what they're doing. If they're not on your doorstep might be possible.

It's been a long time since I used a cnc or lath of any kind but that looks like chatter to me too.

I had occasions with some tools where it just wasn't possible to get the correct speeds, resulting in a terrible finish.

If I were you, I would square the tool post up and try another make of tool and tip.

Also as other posters have mentioned, I wouldn't be happy with that chuck setup.

Have another make of tip on the way. We did notice the tool holder wasn't level, levelled it up but made no difference.

Got a company coming in to re-level the machine and check it's not twisted.

Have also managed to get in touch with the company who produce the lathe in China, sent him some program files and data and awaiting his reply.

Found a company in North London who have the same machine, awaiting a call to see if we can go and take a look at theirs in action.

Trade show in Birmingham today, I made myself quite vocal on the suppliers stand, I'm sure it didn't do any good at all but it made me feel better.

If you need any special tips, carbide with a particular form and / or coating just let me know. We kind of specialise in this area and make them for global sized wheel manufacturers. This is not meant in anyway as an advert simply offering our expertise in this very area to someone involved in it

A tad unfair. He came across as someone trying to help.

Just saying.

I think you're both taking a throwaway post a bit too seriously. I also can't believe that I'm explaining it, suspect I'm being trolled. But here we go: JKRolling - JKRowling, Hence SG altering the text to appear that 'JKRowling' was offering help with magic books. That's how I read it anyway. Apologies to both if I'm way off the mark.

No, I think you are right. It would also be safe to assume that Some Gump does not have a wife or girlfriend.

A long time ago. Long enough to forget any potential cultural reference. Do tell! Actually, don't. Let's not derail the thread, am interested to find out what was wrong with OP's equipment.

Wasn't this discussed many months ago about who to buy from and should you pay for a chinese machine or buy egnlish?

Oh yeah, it was this guy.

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Presume he bought from Yorkshire in the end, given he has guys from the supplier coming down to test it.

Indeed.
Otherwise imagine trying to get the same support from china.

To be honest, if he had to fly a tech out from China and put him up in a decent hotel it would have still been cheaper than buying from the UK.

I did buy from Yorkshire, but my god it was by far the worst choice, it's been a ruddy nightmare from day one, and with regard to support, it takes 2 days to get a reply from Yorkshire, 10 mins from China, they have been more help in the last 2 days than the other lot have in 3 weeks.

When in fact China could have just turned round and said " sorry, we didn't sell you the machine, Yorkshire did, go and ask them for help".

New cutting tips arriving tomorrow so going to give them a go, see where that gets us.
