I am gobsmacked by this but I've just got off the phone to competition car insurance and am delighted that I will be covered to drive the ring so long as it's not a track day and it is a normal public toll road day.

I didn't need to take additional cover my existing annual cover covers it.

Wow!

Has anyone else heard of this? Apparently is a very recent change.

Hope this may be of use to some smile

I wouldn't beleive that until you have it in writing from the Underwriters.

I didn't believe it, the lady checked and double checked and the call was recorded.

Hoping not to have to test it though!

Again, get it in writing.

A recorded call means nothing if the person on the other end has misinterpreted something.

I wouldn't count on it for a second unless it was stated in the Underwriter's T&C or Policy breakdown.

I'm not sure why there's all the surprise and disbelief here?

My car insurance policy with them covers all track days (well, 5 a year but that is extendable if you need more) at no extra cost.

I'll call them back and ask for it in writing. The lady double checked with her manager but will ask for it in writing.

It's because previously A tourist day at the ring was hugely risky as there were no insurance companies that would cover you.

Never heard of the stories of people paying tens of thousands for repairs to the track, track stoppages and anything else they'd charge you for?

Yes, one of my friends got stung to the tune of about 8k as a result so i'm aware of that.

My post was more directed to the other posters that don't seem to think it possible.

The only track mine doesn't cover is Oulton Park.

Drop fluids and cause a biker to crash and snap their spine - you're liable for their medical care for the rest of their life.

Because the Nurburgring ISN'T a track on tourist days, it's a de-restricted toll road, and as far as has previously been demonstrated, all UK insurance policies specifically state exemption for cover on de-restricted toll roads.

I just spoke to them again and a different member of staff said the same - I will be covered so long as it's a normal public toll road day under my normal insurance. This is a recent change.

They can provide cover for track days there too but this would cost extra.

They are sending email confirmation of this smile

I think your insurer is obliged to cover the Third Party claim and then comes and chases you. So that isn't quite clear.

Are you sure about that? Any examples of this?

Here is the written confirmation I've received:

"Just a quick email to confirm, that as long as you are abiding by the highway code, and the Nordschliefe track is being used as a public toll road, you will be covered through your comprehensive insurance.

If the track is closed for a private track use, there will be no cover in place."

Nice one.

Is your policy for a track biased car or modified or some such?

I was with them a few years ago with my track day car and may have to reconsider.

If you get the ts & cs electronically, I would love you to pm them to me.

I'd still want to read the contract.
