Hi all,

I currently run a motor trade business. I have some limiting accounting knowledge but would very much like to delve deeper into the financial side of the business. I have an A Level in Maths as well as a BSc from a Russell Group university. Any suggestions for any type of course I could do out of working time, perhaps Accounting and Finance A Level or some other qualification?

Many thanks

Why bother unless you want to be a book keeper or accountant? My book keeper is so quick; does my books and vat in around 8 hours a month @ £20 p/h leaving me free to earn more money. And it's a legit business expense. Used to take me almost a day a week. Accountant sorts the rest.

Have a loot at AAT. Might take you a couple of years but it would be worth it if that is what you want to learn.

Do you want to learn how to interpret accounting information, or "do the books", or do both?

IMO it's quite difficult to cover the above effectively without practical experience, and that you only really get from doing it part time or full time.

I have come across plenty of self-taught accountants who are very good (often better than what the higher education and professional examinations churn out), but they have learnt as they go along and have an aptitude for it.

Rather than a course may be better to start doing some of your own book-keeping processing (using relevant online help resources related to the package you use), ensuring you understand double entry (books, online resources), and then perhaps finding some books or online content on business finance that will explain how to interpret management and year end statutory accounts effectively.
