Be interesting to see how it fares. I am going to say it tops in everything but noise wink

I'm guessing comparison will be with the F-Type S, not the base model.

But yes it'll be interesting.

Autocar did an F-Type S to 981 GTS a year ago ...

M2 isnt IMHO as nice a looking car, but engine is a peach and although on paper not much cheaper than the Porsche, has more standard spec, like Nav etc.

Porsche has the best residuals by a long chalk. It will be interesting to see.

Very close result!

I guess it all depends what you use he car for, as daily it wold be the Jag for me and the 718 if I wanted weekender/hooner.

The F-Type S is appealing. It was the one car I was eyeing up some time ago alongside the 718 Cayman S as where I may put my money.

Spent a lot of time on the configurator, playing with options, reading write-ups and looking over examples in the dealerships.

A number of factors drove me down the 718 route rather than the F-Type route.

Unreliability of the Jag. So many write-ups listed examples of cheapness of build. Internal plastic panels starting to detach weeks into ownership. Squeaky windows. Electrical failures. One reviewer described how the manual gear-lever came off entirely in his hand as he was changing gear.

The looks. So many plaudits received on this front for the Jag, but for me it is unresolved. The entire front half of the car is stunning - I love it. But the rear-half just does not work. The profile looks out of shape. The rear-slope of the back window goes too far back. Where the XK's looks were beautiful to me in all its proportions, and with the swooping uplift behind the rear window the back looked just fabulous. F-Types specced with the optional rear-spoiler added on helps the rear, but not a lot.

The cost. Similar spec cost around £6k more than the 718 Cayman S for the options I'd want.

So for a car with questionable reliability, with looks that I'm not entirely happy with it and more expensive to boot it became a no-brainer to put my cash down on the 718 S.

As for the M2, well I've come from a 135i Coupé to an M235i, so the M2 would be the natural next step up. And by all accounts it is a spectacular beast, but I wanted a change.

I wondered if i would care about the 4cyl engine, but thinking about it - the Jag engine versus the new 718's? I couldn't buy the Porsche.

Earlier this year visited the Jaguar dealer re F Type and on the 1st. of July collected my 718 from the dealership. Found it easy to make the choice.

I've tried to like the Jaguar....but they are simply too 'old boy' 'Golf Club' 'G & T' for me.

The Beemer is lovely, but it's not a sports car....sure after the excitment of it's speed, I would soon get bored of it.

So a 718 it would be.....despite it's engine....

Hmmm.....it's not about having 'the latest thing' for me......I simply don't like buying second hand cars.

Probably means that he's happy to keep something he buys new and to his own spec for a good number of years, but is less comfortable buying someone else's 'previously enjoyed' specimen, however nice it may appear at first glance.

Or it could mean "I prefer the security of a full manufacturers warranty rather than a third party insurance policy sold as a manufacturers warranty"

Skipping over the dynamics, one feature available on the F-Type coupe that could swing it for some is the Panoramic glass roof. Not sure what these are like to live with but the concept certainly appeals to me.

+1 - With so many options and such differing views by buyers on the desirability of such options it is very difficult to find a car which meets your "must haves" without getting a few "prefer not to haves" or paying over the odds for a car with lots of "not fussed abouts".

Wel, I have turned in my CGTS for an M2, and of course the M2 is not a full bread sports car, but the M2 has a initial turn in that can not be matched by my former CGTS, it is far more sharper, more direct on turn ins.

The sound of the CGTS however is unbeatable, that`s why I do not want the F4 Cayman, I`ll wait for the 718 GT4

Guys, this thread isnt a debate about new versus old. Start a new thread if you want to debate it, cheers.

Just read the review; not the longest in the world, close call in places but the Cayman wins it, not least by being "the best chassis in the world".

It doesn't break down at all. I don't desire deviated stitching or ANY cosmetic options - but there is NO 918S on the Porsche Approved which meets my "must haves" and doesn't have any "really don't wants" at the moment - even completely ignoring colour.
