Hi,

I just had a read over this thread. It is unusual for an SEO person to turn down work. Yes, the client may be supplying a really tough job, but there are always things that can be done.

The problem is that no honest SEO person will be able to guarantee results. Some clients I can some confidently that in 3 months time you will be on page 1. Other clients I have to say I'll do my best, but even after you pay the bill, you may not have an improved ranking. Nobody knows exactly how Google ranks websites. We just have theories.

Also, stay away from "BHW" has mentioned earlier. They use dodgy tactics to ranks sites quickly for a quick profit, then throw away the site once Google punishes them. You don't want quick and dirty work, you want a sustainable long term ranking.

If you are still looking for help, please send me a PM. My caveat is I will do my best but results can't be guaranteed. I've got #1 results for some difficult industries, and my day job is overseeing the SEO strategy for a large 700 employee company.

As said before you need a number of experts.

The amount of time we get asked when on a development job to add something in and make it look pretty. We are developing, not designing! Same with social, same with PPC, same with SEO, same with UI/UX - this list goes on.

This is a problem on both sides I hear all the time.

The trouble is the industry hasn't properly articulated the various specialisms involved within a good website. For many small (and not so small) businesses 'a website' is a single entity made by an 'IT guy'. I've had clients expecting a website 'like Topshop' for a few hundred quid.

Parts of the industry have been quite happy to knock out 'a website' quick and cheap, and that's where it starts to become difficult when the client upgrades/isn't happy/goes to a different supplier and someone then tries to explain what really (should) go on.

Your average punter doesn't understand (or care most of the time). They need educated. I'm going to do my bit- writing this has given me a great idea for a blog post. smile

Couldn't agree with you more. It's like expecting an electrician to build an entire shopping centre, and do the interior fit, POS, marketing - THE WORKS

Which is precisely the analogy I thought of for my blog post. smile

It's a difficult one though, I can understand businesses simplifying the process to make a sale easier but longer term it will lead to the issues described.

But as long as it looks nice most people couldn't care less, until there's a problem.

But you can't always blame customers, the industry needs to do better at marketing itself. Which is somewhat ironic.

One of our fee proposed potential clients went with wix at £1.69 a month instead of a responsive website, CMS, on site SEO, UI/UX design - couldn't fathom our quote being so high.

I laughed a lot and wished him luck
