Namecheap are good.

I have a fair few with Vidahost. They aren't the cheapest, but they provide good customer service for both hosting and domains, so it's nice to have them all in one place.

depends what you want with it / what you are happy to do yourself...
- just make sure that it does end up registered in your name / you own it - you would be amazed by how many web companies register their customers domains in the web company's name to stop them moving...
- any of the independent companies should be fine - godaddy / hostgator / 123-reg / namesco - all can do it - prices are generally similar unless you get a discount offer...

What my thinking is, get a domain name thats relivant to one of the services I provide, create a landing page that links to my website, does that make sense.

Is there a company that can do all that in house for me because I would'nt know how to put that together.

A specific landing page is fine but what are you going to do with it to get it in front of people? Have you considered the marketing side?

Completely agree with akirk about making sure it's registered in your own name.

I'll also add to have a look at the cost of extras before making a decision. See if there are charges for things like custom DNS, WHOIS privacy, custom nameservers and the big one; transferring the domain to another registrar!

Feel free to PM me if you want to discuss landing page options. smile

lots of options, but you need to think about what you are trying to do / where you are spending your money...
for example - why are you thinking of spending money on gateway sites when your main site is not mobile friendly, so could well be penalised by google:
https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/mobile-fri...
get the core site working well first, then look at how you market it - there is little point in marketing to push people through to a site which may put them off...

I'm with 123-Reg and never had any problems. I would say this, for belt and braces don't host your domain and website with the same provider. If you have any issues/fall out they effectively have you by the balls. I have a reseller hosting account with EZPZ Hosting and if there was ever an issue I could log into 123-Reg and change my nameservers to point at a new host. If all your eggs are in the one basket then you increase your risk IMHO.

Another +1 for 123-reg

they are one of the biggest and most used by all the web companies I know of!

I've looked at buying windycommon.com

At present I can buy it from HugeDomains.com at one price, and namecheap.com at a lower price. How/why is it for sale at different prices from different vendors? Surely either it is unique so only has one owner, or it isn't unique (in which case it doesn't have much value)?

Could someone help me understand this please?

Domain vendors pay the same icann fee then can charge what they like for the domain. Some will try and sell the domain only and some will go for the hard upsell (Godaddy) where they try and sell you a sofa and life insurance at the same time!

To cut a long story short just use Namecheap or TSOHost or 34SP.

I'd also be quick about it. I only say that as it's £7 or so and isn't worth thinking about too much.
