As the title says, I've had x1 job since leaving college in 1990 which has just come to an end. It's a very strange but also at the same time exciting position to find yourself in. Bit of background, I started working for the family micro business following a stint at college studying Business & Finance. Working up through the various jobs and being able to do most including accounts, sales, manufacturing, I finally ended up as MD in 2001. I have managed to improve the profitability and grow the business during my time as MD whilst managing a team of 6 staff. However, changing employment rules and growing costs plus a skill shortage in replacement of key staff has led me to finally sell the business.

The big question is ...... 'What next??'

There's not enough in the pot to comfortably retire on and to be honest, I'm not ready for that. Obviously, being the boss has had its perks and freedom which I'd loose if I took on a role elsewhere. On the flip side, someone else can have the stress and worry. The alternative is to start a new business doing something I love, maybe car related, but obviously this has no gurantee of working and could just waste time and money. My biggest concern is that I may have become the employment equivalent of 'typecast' having been in the x1 job and have therefore made myself almost unemployable!

Have any Pistonheader's been in a similar situation and how did they approach it?

Fortunately, I have no pressure financially to do anything desperate but then this may be more of a curse as it doesn't focus the mind as much!

From my experience if you seek being employed you will go one of 2 ways.

1. You will find a job as you clearly have marketable skills to have achieved what you have and will love taking a salary with others taking the hassles.

2. You will find a job and hate the structures, the framework you are forced into and the barriers you hit.

If you do your own thing, there is risk but can you afford risk or want it.

What line of business were you in? What are your key skills?
