Discussion
I think that your biggest problem is that you are thinking of doing SEO
Your current approach is along the lines of standing on a hill and shouting out to the population that you can sell them xyz
Instead you need to go to the relevant population and have a more personal conversation - so imagine walking down that hill into the town, to someone with a bike, introducing yourself and saying this is how I can help you, and this is why you should do business with me - fare more likely to be successful...
When you are competing with big brands they can shout louder than you - even if you were top of Google - if there isn't brand awareness then the buyer is still likely to move over you to a recognised brand...
The suggestion above to use ebay is a great way to start to build brand awareness - people tend to see the product first on ebay and the seller second...
The other focus should be that you take your business to the market - sponsor / support the relevant forums, and play a role in their discussions... be seen at events / get involved with those writing blogs / etc.
i.e. be proactive, not random and reactive...

Theres some good stuff there, I'll start working through it all, cheers!
It's a 1 year unopened return policy as market leaders sportsbikeshop offer the same, as is our pricing and free postage, and we are using Paypal as our payment gateway, and people can pay using their card without a Paypal account - does that not come across?
We have no https on the cart as we do not take any details other than postal information and Paypal handle the secure details. Should we change to https? do we need to?

OK that was a bit of a woosh parrotThe reason why consumers have a year is because you have no model return form.
The unopened thing is a nonsense - how does the consumer get the opportunity to inspect the item ?
It's also 14 days to return not 7
Have a read of the latest DSR's

This is a really good shout, I am always trying to say to my clients that successful SEO is not just SEO, it is a combination of channels and mediums that all compliment each other. Google loves strong brand signals! Your current approach is along the lines of standing on a hill and shouting out to the population that you can sell them xyz

Do you have any rough dates you know of when the rankings started to tumble? My site has always ranked well on my key words, but since the summer appears to have dropped off a cliff.... Any suggestions etc. gratefully received.

1, Tidy site and make more appealing and set up GA with tracking - or give someone a day (£350 ish) to do it
2, Go HTTPS
3, Wack ebay with the longest titles you can and all listings imploring you to "call the office if unsure" BE DESCRIPTIVE PUT PART NUMBER in title, have a strong message about your company in the listing
4, Build up a database and market to it
5, Interact with your customers asking for instagram pics of the bits on their bikes or whatever - put instafeed on your site
6, Do SEO
A consultant would stretch that lot out over 2 months - yours for nowt - now do it!!!
