Worked with a particular client for a decade. The writings on the wall seem to have been there for a while, but I think the removal company has finally turned up for the Cheese.

Fortunately I've got other parts to the business and have further diversification planned.

Exciting times ahead.

I thought this was going to be a discussion about that stupid book, I had one handed too me during a work transition, it says a lot at a manager who hand one too you, hes either A. not very smart or B. thinks of his staff as little people/mice... In my case it was A, he was being made redundant after the new team had gleaned all the info they could from him, he didn't see it coming and wasn't ready for it.

To OP good look with adapting and evolving, best advice I was given "change happens, you still exist afterwards, you don't disappear in a puff of smoke, your still you." that was given to me by someone who'd been through a lot of redundancies.

That's the type of book David Brent would be handing around to staff.

I don't think it was that one but I was handed something similar back in the '90s, along with the other couple of hundred employees of a multi-national engineering consultancy. It nearly sparked a riot...

I only dipped into it before consigning it to the back of the desk drawer but I remember one gem was in relation to workplace stress. It was along the lines of "Stress is only felt by those who feel unappreciated at work or have time on their hands - therefore working harder & setting harder goals is the way to banish stress".

I'd have loved to see how that one played out at a tribunal!

I suppose I need to be a little careful.

It's a corporate business who has retained me to look after their occupational for close to 15 years. Part of a much larger business, there has been push for centralising core services for a few years. We ran our part well, and I've survived, with the support of the local business several raids on my position.

In the past couple of years a lot of people have changed, locally and centrally, and I have been reporting to the local business through the 'corporate' personnel. I have very much been side-lined with all the interesting work cherry picked, and the duff left for me.

I've done a little fighting to keep it, but to a degree my heart is not in it. I'm tired of watching my back, and not particularly keen on the level of work as it is at present. I'll see what happens in the next few days

So that's the now....

I've already diversified into drawing Land Reg compliant floor plans. That's built in the last few years into a busy business, albeit one that involves a lot of travelling, and I am quite exposed to one particularly active client. I've tried to grow it a couple of times with extra people, but it's a difficult jump to make, with the largest actually getting the work in and queries answered when I'm on the road so much...

I have another diversification planned. Needs some training which I'm doing next week. It links nicely into plans, but is a tad different...

I've only just read the Cheese Story. I quite liked it. Saw quite a few similarities. I did not get upset at being in a rats nest, as I don't think the interpretation should be too literal...

If that's the only company you do work for - aren't you essentially an employee these days?

My dad gave me that stupid cheese book, I'll never forget that, I'd worked for him for 10 years, I ended up "running" the company day-to-day for two years but his cheese moved and he point blank refused to go find it or let anyone else find it for him so I had to quit. laugh

My company is diversified into three separate sites and two third party sources. Two of the sites have more than one revenue stream. Then there is a whole offline side to it with multiple streams. I've done this for a reason, and it has caused slower overall growth and more work, but it's far more stable in the long run.

Lesson learnt from 12 years of watching someone refuse to change with the times.

He also gave me "7 Habits Of Highly Effective People".... I might buy him "How To Win Friends & Influence People" for Christmas (actually a really good book!)

OP - good luck and keep diversifying.
