James Watt, one of the founders of Brewdog covers this sort of tactic in his book. It's written in a bit of an exhausting tone, but the knowledge in it is really good.
It's a terrible book, I'm surprised you took the time to wade through all the "we're so anti establishment" crap to get any useful points.
The complete car cash documentary on BBC featuring Brewdog must have killed pretty much any credibility that guy ever had?

Anyway, in response to the thread there are a few mornings when I look at my own business and think... "Yup".

whats with all the porn shops on fairly major roads. The A1 is riddled with them, one section near to Biggleswade has about 3 and a big swingers club! Do the 'Pervs' like to get out on a bit of dual carriage way before they purchase the lastest in Gimp suit technology or double ended dildos ? Seems like a weird location to me.
see my post 2 above yours.
yeah i know , that's what i was referring too, doesnt answer why they have all suddenly sprung up
cheap rent
isolated car parks
Long distance drivers, away from home on overnighters, often from abroad these days on week long trips, tend to be using main trunk roads.

An ice cream parlour in the North East.

Oh and you've spelled 'lose' wrong in the title. It's a pet hate of mine.
Talking to the owner of an ice cream parlour in the north east, we had to book to get in, she had plans to close in January and February for maintenance and holidays but it was so busy she couldn't shut, if you provide a good product they will come.
And the British are weird like that. I took the kids down to the local beach on New Years day a few years ago. It was sub-zero and the wind was flaying the skin off your face. The cafe was open and more than a couple of people were buying ice creams!

A friend of mine's wife decided to start a business selling a terrible, and terribly middle class, wooden children's toy. We all warned him it was a hobby business and doomed, in fact going to the pub with him was like an alcohol improved version of Dragons Den. After all the fun and interesting bits of starting up a new business were over and it turned in to the slog of trying to make money she soon lost interest and decided to focus on being a mother. My friend is down £27k and still paying 3PL costs on a business turning over about £100pw. Her parents are in for £50k.

A lot of people use that term to describe themselves and then you find out they're doing something like Herbalife.

There is this in my local area. And yes it does open. I have no idea, who and why would use such a shop but it opens from 1400-21:00 all week. Perhaps its more of a hobby than anything!

I suppose the most obvious terrible ideas are the ones you see in every high street. Cafe opens, closes down, another opens in the same place or close by, closes down... repeat forever. Not a poor business model, just poor location/execution etc. Same for clothes shops, hairdressers, etc. Retail must have cost more people ££££ than anything else.

Also, almost any new Social Media site unless it is very very niche.

Guess it depends on how many staff and what the rent is like. If it is just on a dedicated server and you get certain members to act as moderators, then the cost of the server and a similar salary to what the PH mods get. wink

Bloody Forever Living... Yes, it's the Aloe Cleansing Tea that has made your skin improve, not the fact that you've got no money so have given up the McDonalds lunch every other day.

That will go quick considering they don't appear to have any income streams.

How quickly you can stop is an important factor when considering a car.

dessert lounges, on trend but how long?
A what? On trend where? I've never heard of such a business.
Glasgow for one.

Popular with Asians.
There are quite a few in and around Birmingham also. Not been in any of them myself
If you don't go to the pub then to socialise you need a late night establishment of some kind....

Dessert lounges are making a roaring trade especially in the East Midlands. Loosely knowing an owner of one, they've made so much money over last few years that even if it is a fad that only lasts a few more years they'll have made a nice few quid.

I think to be really successful you need to be located somewhere near a Asian / diverse area or bang in the city centre. These places attract a lot of Asians who don't drink so it's become the place for non drinkers to go for a night out with mates. Eg it's the equivalent of Friday night trip to bar / pub but instead to dessert place for a milkshake / waffles / coffees. Cracking gap in the market which I'm surprised took this long to cover.
