I work with a contractor who I have real issues with. He is not a UK national and is always going on about saving tax and cheating the UK out of money. We have nearly come to blows over it already its that bad!

He is setting up some scam system where he employs other people and pays them a fair wage (30-40k average IT stuff) he is then talking about paying "invoices" from other companies that his employee is a director of, to get money out of his company and to the other party.

At first I thought he was running it as an MSC and paying the employees dividends but he thinks he can get round it by using these fake invoices for "general services".

Now I dont particually like the guy nor his attitude towards the UK. He just wants to scam what ever he can. Is he asking for trouble? How can I go about reporting him to HMRC?

Inform his accountant. The accountant is obliged, by law, to report him (I hope he's not a client of mine!!!!!!).

Ive tried to get as much info from him as I can without making my intentions obvious.

From what he has said, it was his accountant (who's name I do not have unfortunately) who has suggested this and told him that if it got investigated his own company would be in the clear. His accountant is also a non UK national so I am guessing has the same morals/intentions as the guy I want to report.

The accountant obviously isn't concerned about losing his practicing licence or a jail term.

Apart from being annoyed with this individual or having a strong sense of civic duty, have you any other reasons for shopping this character.

No, its nothing personal what so ever, I work with him daily and other than his attitude towards the subject of money and the fact he doesn't really pull his weight I have no issue with him at all. I know we both get the same rate, there is no competition for jobs etc.

Even though some may criticise me for running as a Ltd Co and say I shirk tax myself, everything I do is legal and above board. Christ, I dont even claim for my mobile as I dont make that many business calls and didnt see it as fair. I just find his attitude and tactics for dodging tax wrong and, if possible, want to report him for it. All the more when he boasts about it to me.

What these people don't seem to be able to grasp is that they are not just cheating the taxman but every honest law abiding tax payer in the country frown

Report the guy by all means, it doesn't affect me... but be prepared to be reported for any misedmenaour of any kind you may ever commmit, knowingly or unknowingly, even if for perfectly moral reasons.

So would you condone what he is doing then? That being, to knowingly and intentionally commit fraud?

IMO there is a huge difference to doing so intentionally and doing so by mistake. To HMRC maybe not, but by my principles and morals there is.

I wouldn't worry. Talk is cheap.

Any competant accountant will sort him out.

The Revenue have a system of checks and balances
in place to ensure that anyone who earns a lot,
but doesn't pay much tax, gets closely looked at.

I wish I had a pound for every conversation with a contractor
about tax fiddles.

99% of it is just that - conversation.

Boils down to "I suffer because of a government run by thieves, therefore everyone else should."

The correct attitude is to applaud the guy for having the guts to do this given the penalties. I'd be too scared to do anything illegal to avoid tax myself, thanks to the bullies being in charge.

There is an anoymous phone line to report fraud.

Somneone who screwed me over seven years ago is currently spending Xmas in jail as a result of me calling it.

On the contrary, I socialise regularly with several of the other guys that I work with. Lets not go down that route as it is nothing of the sort and I am quite offended at the suggestion. I mention those points as his answer to any problems is that he will just up and leave the UK.
