Why would you need 40k to setup an eBay business? There are a lot easier ways to make money online (with only a small outlay) than deal with customers, or even staff for that matter.
Like what?
Buy my company and find out... wink

Why would anyone agree to buy something when they have no idea what they're buying?

Are you looking for a long or short-term return and are you willing to lose the 40k or do you really need it at some point in the future? What is your risk profile?

Could be more interesting to find a business idea that requires funding and then ultimately provide a more profitable long term punt and maybe more fun.

If I had £40k I would be looking at big returns for my money. Setting up a ebay shop and flogging phones wouldnt be my first choice. If your background is in IT then surely there is as more worthwhile and lucrastive venture where your skills lie.

If you think Ebay is the preverbial rainbow with a pot of shiney stuff at the end then I too would go niche. Much more likely to find larger margins but the volumes might be lower. I would also want my shop on froogle and all the other ones to make sure I got enough through-put.

I've done ok out of buying stuff from these people and flogging it on eBay, although you'll soon discover there's loads of people doing exactly the same thing.

And you can't sell sex toys on eBay (I know this because I run an online sex toys business, amongst other things). eBay and PayPal are I think run by puritans. Actually you can add Yahoo! into that list as well. But that's another kettle of fish smile

Anyway I do believe that a professional looking listing with the service to back it up *can* set you apart from the eleventythousand other people selling exactly the same stuff on eBay. If you can spell, punctuate and have a basic understanding of English Grammar you're halfway to winning!

had a quick look through gemwholesale and to be fair their rrp prices for things are silly.

so, says the value of the goods is about 1200 quid, and they are selling it for 270 quid, looks like a good margin so further explore . . . .

and found this

PANASONIC 2GB SD CARD £129.99

they say the RRP is 129.99

you can buy them for 7 pound.

wonder who is making the money here?

Well obviously you'd do your own due diligence first.

I bought and sold a load of trainers - worked very well.

Chap I know is semi retired and has started to print peoples family trees for them. They do the research and then e mail him the details for him to print on special paper. Just part time he's pulling in over £1000 aApparantly there's only 2 other people in the country doing it.

For all the bad things that have been said about ebay, it is a business which is small start-up costs, relatively small 'agency' cuts (ebay and paypal fees) low overhead (as you are from home) and you can get to millions of potential customers for the price of a few pence listing fee.

If you can get the right niche you will make money over those who will try ebay first over the rest of the net. If you get the right commodity goods you will make money over those who will try ebay first over the rest of the net.

It is just the same as any other business. Buy low and sell high.
