Software for website/business
Discussion
Hi, can anyone recommend a software package that would allow me to build a website portal with design templates that could be used for business purposes to include transactions, data capture and dbase mgmt, forum hosting. Currently using windows xp.
I know there are lots of you who do design on here, but it is something i am looking to do/learn myself, any advice welcome, budget upto £200.
apologies if this has been covered before....
thanks

I'd say it really depends on how much work you really want to do...
It 'sounds' like you're not an expert in the area (genuine apologies if that's not the case), and it's unlikely you'll be writing all this stuff from scratch yourself if that is the case.
In which case, you can get the majority of stuff you need for free, there are various bulletin board providers available (can't remember if vbulletin is free?), and a basic CMS such as Nuke for example - usually php based, which means you'll just need some libraries and an apache install - all free. All editing can be done in notepad (free ).
Unless you have a fixed IP, you'll need to pay for hosting, and there are some of these which come with 'free' shopping cart tools etc (if not, I'm sure if you look on sourceforge you'll find some open source stuff). I think that totals all the stuff you'd need...
But (and it is a big but) this is by no means straight forward to string together well if you're relatively new to it, and could take a fair while to get accustomed to / good at. (not saying you shouldn't do it yourself though - great way to learn).
If you could give us a bit more of an idea of what you're trying to do - there's probably a few people on here who could point you in the right direction?
Oh yeah, Database wise, MySQL is free, and will do all you need for that side of things I'd have thought.

thanks james, i am going to have a look at www.netobjects.com and see how i get on from there...i appreciate it may not have the look/design features of some of the leading webdesign, but probably a good starting point for myself.
