I have been sounded out about a very good job opportunity, having been identified through good performance in my current employment. The job is significantly more senior than my current one, and is a management role. I have no management experience and it seems that this may prove to be a stumbling block. I am very keen on the job, but do appreciate that it is a big step up. Im confident that I can perform in the main aspect of the role, but appreciate my lack of experience in the management aspect.

I appreciate there's no replacing real-life experience, but I can't get that in the timescales I have, so...

Has anyone been on a training course that would be recommended for someone in my position, with training for new managers, giving lessons in managing people in the workplace, management/motivation techniques etc?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Hi Diddy

Having worked for a few of the big blue chips over the years, I have attended quite a few management type courses. And you know what? I often come away thinking they were good, but never really seem to actually 'learn' things outside of common sense.

I have managed some very different types of people and had some very different managers myself over the years. In my experience, learning and trying to use 'management techniques' that are not 'you', can come across as manipulative and most people can just smell the trining course bullsh*t.

I'm certainly no guru, but do have some ideas of my own about what makes a good people manager. I think that its more a state of mind than a do's and don'ts list served up in a training course A4 binder.

Enjoy what you do - that enthusiasm shine through to others.
Be clear, concise, honest and consistant.
Want the people around you to succeed.
Be a real person and encourage other to do the same - individuality is good.

Anyway, enough of my ramblings..

Good luck by the way.

Cheers,
Matt

I think you are probably right Doctor Matt, and I am also of the view that the majority of this type of learning is better done outside of the classroom. However, with a view to getting this job, I was hoping to suggest a few well-known, established courses they could send me on to make up (to some extent) for my lack of experience. I believe I have the ability to take the job on, but I think my lack of experience may just stop them from choosing me.

Thanks for the advice, and good luck.
