Choose a corporate identity first (colour, typeface etc) then choose the card layout, trying to do it in one step is confusing matters IMHO.

Don't you just hate it when designs get to this stage!

I like the bottom two, but would move your name and title up to the halfway level. I don't like the way the bottom line of text (Royal Tunbridge Wells) sits on the edge of the colour block, and would move it up.

The blue ones make you look like you work for the NHS.

Also, having BA (Hons), MSCE after your name, strikes me as, well, a little bit, erm, wanky.

If it was a proper professional body with layers of membership like MRICS or FRICS then I could see value in it but otherwise the card is your contact details not a miniature CV.

I would have the third one down on the left hand side.

A lot of the benefit from design is subconscious through connotations of fonts and colours and spacings.

You can analyse it forever, or just go for the 'hunch' which will encompass the above within seconds. Thats my hunch!

Also 'hons' has a capital 'H'.

I agree that it can look a little desperate (to those with degrees, who know that almost every degree is an Honours degree) but just 'BA, MCSE' would look a little tidier if you want to get them in. And why not? Otherwise you could have been some greasy yob who left school at 14 and sold cars!

I would actually choose to keep it. I have seen a lot of cards with qualifications on, especially just 'standard degrees' (like mine I might add!).

That said, it is usually in a smaller typeface or a more 'authoritative' font. Think small - maybe half the size and Times New Roman.

In that case blue is out due to it looking a bit too much like the NHS logo as has been said.

The solid purple could be worth a look with the right font but get rid of the drop shadow, you're not running a taxi firm.

Okay, okay, I was just giving the OP of an example of a serif font to start from.... smile

Calisto or Palatino are less 'standard' fonts.

If you've recognised the need to present an authoritative image then I would suggest you avoid the somewhat dated and 'trendy' use of lower case.

If that is your type of clients, I would perhaps consider a more traditional but ultra high quality approach.

When you see a card in your hand with a heavy weight, textured, watermarked paper with classic silver or black text, you feel like you are dealing with the chairman of the board.

Completely depends on the type of impression you want to portray. We actually did a pretty successful cold mailing to private schools some years back which I swear worked so well due to the classic, simple, high quality approach.

I concur! A few hours of time from a professional will be a sound investment that will pay for itself very quickly.

am happy to give people lifts if the price is right wink

thanks for the advice so far chaps. Yes i will be dealing with private schools but at the same time want to be relatively modern in approach without putting them off.

This is perfectly achievable to present an authoritative and a modern, dynamic image but it's also exceptionally easy for the inexperienced to aim for both and hit neither.
