I need 10,000 euros for a purchase in Portugal. Having only exchanged small quantities of money for holidays at the post office, I'm assuming one can get a better price on a big purchase. But, how and where?

Thanks

I think you're better off talking to your bank. For large amounts there are a number of ways to transfer the money. The longer you can allow it to transfer the cheaper it is.. SWIFT etc...

We use http://www.hifx.co.uk for large amounts. Get quotes from several transfer companies, I'd be surprised if your bank is competitive though.

And, as already said - not a good time to be buying Euros :-(

Cheers,

I used to use Currencies4Less because Lloyds were awful but when I rang FirstDirect they had even better rates and lower charges. So you never know...

We used a exchange company recently, and in reflection I wish we had gone straight through our bank. On a £100k I think the cash advantage was sub £400 going with the exchange company, and the extra grief, hassle, checks, forms, phone calls, chasing and hassle for 10 days while the transfer went through was defiantly NOT worth it. Have a nice chat with your bank and see what they can offer you. Good luck whatever you choose.
